Mr. Robot 1.02

eps1.1_ones-and-zer0es.mpeg

Elliot meets with Tyrell who wants him to leave AllSafe and join Evil Corp. Tyrell promises to make him rich. Elliot says no thank you.

Elliot goes home and hacks Tyrell’s accounts. It seems too easy. He freaks. He thinks Tyrell must have let him. He destroys his machines. I love this part of the show, the paranoia. Elliot or at least the actor playing him and the way the show is produced totally sells Elliot’s fears.

Elliot has a chat with Gideon, his boss, about fsociety, the group that Colby, the dude who was arrested last episode, supposedly heads. They are demanding his release. Elliot doesn’t know about their latest video. He was too high off the drugs he got from Shayla, his dealer/neighbor.

Elliot comes home from work and finds Darlene in his shower. She’s there to bring him to Mr. Robot. He notices that she sees the men who Elliot thinks are following him. She delivers him to Mr. Robot who tells him about their plans to blow up a natural gas plant. Elliot is hesitant to go along with the plan. Mr. Robot gives him a speech about 1s and 0s. He’s trying to motivate Elliot to go along with the plan but Elliot rejects Mr. Robot's view of the world and leaves.

He goes to see Shayla only to find Fernando, her supplier, in her apartment. They have a chat. Fernando is trying to intimidate Elliot. Elliot has power. He has hacked Fernandos accounts. He could turn the guy in but Fernando is Shayla's only source for Elliot's drug of choice. Once he figures out that Fernando has been raping Shayla he decides the drugs aren’t worth it and makes an anonymous tip that leads to Fernando’s arrest.

Elliot goes back to Mr. Robot with a plan to break into Steel Mountain without killing everyone. Mr. Robot isn’t receptive. Instead he asks Elliot to tell him about his relationship with his father and his father’s death. Elliot reluctantly complies. Mr. Robot then pushes Elliot off the boardwalk onto the rocks below.

I still love the music and how it is used to help set the tone.

There’s also a weird little subplot involving Angela and Ollie that looks like it may blossom into something bigger. He buys a music CD from someone selling them on the street. He tries ripping the music on to his computer but something isn’t right. Clearly there’s software on the CD that’s helping the CD seller to hack into Ollie's machine. Ollie is lured out of the apartment by a phony email. The hacker gets shots of Angela getting into the shower. It’s unclear who the hacker is aligned with or working for.

I’m a little more intrigued by the show now. I’m not ready to issue a judgement yet as to how much I love it but there are elements that I dig.
