The Punisher 1.01

3AM

Frank Castle is still depressed over losing his family. He has a new identity, Pete Castiglione, and a beard. He works at a construction site during the day. Most of his coworkers laugh at him because he doesn't talk to anyone. The only exception is Donny, a new guy who shares his sandwich with Frank after one of the other guys smashes Frank's lunch.

Frank pays a visit to Curt, who served with him in the Marines, lost a leg, and now runs a group therapy session for veterans.

Federal officer Dinah Madani decides to investigate the deaths of Colonel Schoonover and Lieutenant Frank Castle. She enlists Sam Stein, her new partner, who seems reluctant at first but agrees to follow her lead.

Donny goes out drinking with the other guys and gets stuck with the tab. Lance owes some money to the Gnucci gang and turns to one of the other guys for help. He also ends up recruiting Donny for a hit on a mob run poker game. The hit does not go well. Donny drops his wallet, it flops open and one of the guys they are robbing sees his driver's license.

Lance and his buddies take Donny back to the construction site. They are planning to kill him. They beat him up and throw him in a large container with high walls that he can't climb out of. They start to fill it with concrete.

Frank shows up. He was at the site breaking walls with a hammer, which seems to be all he does at this construction site. He beats up Lance and company, saves Donny from drowning in concrete, and then goes after the guys at the card game.

I don't think Frank is given enough to do in this episode. He's in a funk until he finally snaps out of it toward the end. I was okay with it for part of the episode but it got old. I had a bigger problem with the villains in this episode. They just didn't impress me. There was nothing special about them.A good superhero show needs a good villain or several good villains to help it shine. I think Jon Berenthal is a good actor but he needs someone to play off of like other heroes have had, someone like Wilson Fisk, Killgrave, Cottonmouth, or Black Mariah.

Not a great episode. It feels a lot forced but I'm curious to see where this goes. I'm not sure I will watch the whole season but I'm willing to give it a few more episodes.
