Cowboy Bebop 1.09

Jamming with Edward

The Bebop stops on Earth. What brought them there isn't clear but when they hear about a big bounty for a hacker they stick around long enough to learn that once again not everything is as it seems. The hacker's name is Edward. They go looking for him but can't seem to find any reliable information about Edward. Instead of finding Edward, Edward finds them.

Edward is a teenager and as is eventually revealed, a girl. She has been in contact with a satellite that has been orbiting the Earth for more than 50 years. The satellite or rather the AI that controls the satellite, is lonely and bored. It also likes to carve images in the planet using a network of satellite lasers. The images it carves are referred to in the media as Earth Paintings.

Spike, Faye, and Jet work with Ed to capture the AI. They download a copy of it on to a hard drive. They try to turn it in for the bounty but the authorities say no deal when they learn that the perpetrator wasn't a person. The Bebop crew tries to leave Ed behind as they get ready to leave Earth but she has a trick up her sleeve. She hacks into the Bebop's mainframe and forces it to return and pick her up.

The story isn't much to write about. The most interesting part of this episode is the introduction of Ed. She is the final member of the crew to be introduced. I recall that the first time I watched Cowboy Bebop I didn't pick up on the fact that Ed was a girl until several episodes later. It is stated explicitly on this episode but it happens so quickly that it is easy to miss.
