Justice League 1.07

The Brave and the Bold

Flash and Green Lantern team up to battle Gorilla Grodd. The two heroes are not the best of friends. Flash is very informal and immature. Green Lantern is very serious and disciplined. Flash is constantly angering GL with his quips. Most of the other heroes, with the exception of Superman, show up in the second part of this story but for the most part the spotlight is on Flash and Green Lantern.

Part 1

Flash takes a break from chatting to a couple women to chase down a runaway truck. The man in the passenger seat hinders Flash's attempts to stop the truck by shooting at him with a high tech weapon. He finally catches up to the truck when it is going over a long bridge. The truck skids and goes over the side of the but Flash manages to rescue them.

Green Lantern shows up and prevents the truck from splashing into the water. The truck was full of radioactive isotopes that the two men stole from a research facility. Flash and Green Lantern question the men but they have no memory of what they did or why they did it. It turns out that they both work at the research facility.

Green Lantern and Flash visit the research facility. They talk to Dr. Sarah Corwin but don't learn anything of interest. They leave when they hear that the police are chasing a runaway gorilla. The gorilla is driving a car. Flashes chases it down but before he can apprehend the gorilla Dr. Corwin shows up and shoots him with a large weapon.

Flash has weird dreams. It begins with a recollection of the accident that gave him his super powers. He then continues to change shape in various ways: first he is fat, then he is super skinny, then his head gets really big, then he looks like a marionette, and finally he looks like a gorilla. He wakes up in jail. The cops show him video tape of him stealing the radioactive isotopes. He has no memory of it. Green Lantern shows up and bails him out.

They go looking for the gorilla again. They find it. It talks to them. His name is Solivar and he is from Gorilla City. He is searching for Grodd, a fugitive from Gorilla City. Grodd possesses mind control technology that he plans to use on Gorilla City. Grodd contacted Dr. Corwin via e-mail and she is now helping him. Before Solivar can finish telling them everything Flash takes off for the research facility.

Green Lantern and Solivar follow him but before they leave they put on headbands that protect them from Grodd's mind control technology. They arrive in time to see that Grodd has taken over Flash's mind. Green Lantern fights Flash. Grodd uses this time to activate his plan. The episode ends with a burst of energy spreading out from the research facility. Green Lantern unsuccessfully tries to stop it with his ring. When the energy burst clears the city is gone.

Part 2

Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman, and Hawkgirl detect what happened to Central City. They go to investigate and find that Central City isn't missing, it is just invisible and protected by a large energy barrier. Batman contacts them. He has detected a similar energy signature in west Africa. He asks them to meet him there.

Flash wakes up. He doesn't remember what happened. Solivar has given him a headband to protect him from Grodd's mind control technology. Green Lantern tries destroying the machine that is powering the force field around Central City but it is also protected by an energy barrier. They wander around Central City until they find Grodd delivering a speech to a group of humans.

Green Lantern and Flash sneak into the crowd and remain undetected until Flash starts hurling insults at Grodd. The mind control monkey sees them and orders the crowd to destroy the heroes. Grodd sneaks away while the heroes are tangled up fighting the crowd which includes soldiers with high tech weaponry.

Grodd and Dr. Corwin head to a military base within the limits of the force field. Grodd uses his mind control helmet to get them in the base. Grodd and Dr. Cowin aim and launch 4 nuclear missiles at Gorilla City. Green Lantern catches up to them just as the missiles are launched. He chases after the missiles and escapes the energy barrier through the same hole that the nuclear missiles use.

The other heroes rendezvous in Africa. They are captured by the security forces of Gorilla City. They are interrogated but they quickly break free and escape. Their pursuers give up chasing them once they discover that there are incoming missiles headed for Gorilla City. Green Lantern takes out two of the missiles, Martian Manhunter takes out another one, Between them Hawkgirl and Wonder Woman takes out the final missile.

Wonder Woman is buried in a mass of rubble as she tries to prevent anyone in Gorilla from getting injured by a chunk of the the fourth missile. Batman freaks out and unsuccessfully tries to dig her out. She manages to escape on her own but she is touched by Batman's concern for her well being gives him a kiss.

Grodd is furious when he sees what has happened. He fights with the Flash who tricks him by rewiring the circuitry in his mind control helmet and then goads him into using it again. Grodd's brain fries when he activates the helmet. He isn't dead. Solivar takes him back to Gorilla City. It looks like Grodd is brain dead. The story ends with the reveal that Grodd is just faking brain damage.

Thoughts

This story was very action heavy. Superman is not missed. Martian Manhunter and Hawkgirl are there but they don't get much to do that isn't action related. I don't hate Flash's humor but there's a bit too much of it in this episode for me. This is a good episode but it isn't one of my favorites from this season.
