Cowboy Bebop 1.17

Mushroom Samba

The crew of the Bebop are out of fuel, out of food, and drifting through space. The Bebop gets hit by another ship. The other ship takes off. The Bebop crash lands on Io, one of Jupiter's moons. The suface looks a lot like the desert southwest of North America. Ed and Ein go looking for food while the others work on fixing the ship.

Ed and Ein find a roadside vendor who is selling watermelons. He refuses to help them. They stowaway in the car of one of his customers, a bounty hunter named Coffee. The police search Coffee's car and arrest her when they find Ed and Ein inside.

Ed and Ein meet Domino Walker, a man with a bag full of mushrooms. He gets attacked by Shaft, who claims that his brother died from eating the mushrooms that Domino sold him. Ein eats a mushroom that falls out of Domino's bag and starts acting weird.

Ed takes some of the mushrooms and tricks Jet, Spike, and Faye into eating one each. They all start to experience hallucinations. Ed notices that Domino has a bounty on his head. He and Ein take off on a scooter in search of Domino. Coffee escapes from the police about this time and chases after the two smaller bounty hunters. Shaft soon joins the chase after Domino. They all converge on a train.

Shaft and Coffee crash and are not seen from again. Ed and Ein catches up to Domino and with some help from a cow, which forces the train to stop, they are able to catch him. They don't take him to the authorities but instead take his bribe of a bag full of mushrooms to leave him alone. The mushrooms are supposed to be very valuable but the crew of the Bebop soon learn that they are just ordinary shiitake mushrooms devoid of any special value.

I like this episode. It was fun to see Ed and Ein chase after a bounty instead of the others. I loved the hallucinations. This episode doesn't have the deep character moment that some other episodes do but I really like the whimsical nature of it.

There is a commentary track on the DVD with Shinichiro Watanabe (director) and Yoko Kanno (music composer) but it they don't have much to say about the episode itself.
