Justice League 1.12

The Savage Time

Part 1

Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Martian Manhunter are returning to the Watchtower from a mission is space. Batman is waiting for them on the satellite headquarters when there is a flash of light and Batman and the satellite disappear.

The heroes descend to Earth only to discover that things have changed. Someone named Vandal Savage is in charge. They are attacked by the police after they show refuse to answer questions. Batman shows up and helps them escape.

Something is different about Batman. Once they get to his hideout they learn that something has changed the world. It happened during World War II. D-Day was a disaster. The Allies lost the war.

The League goes to investigate the weird energy signature that they first detected when the satellite disappeared. They discover a doorway to the past. They go through, everyone except Batman. They wind up in occupied France during World War II. The American troops are having a hard time. The Germans are are equipped with some much more powerful technology that existed at the time of the war.

The team splits up. Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl stay behind to help the troops fight War Wheels. Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter head for Berlin. They save the life of Steve Trevor, an American spy, just before he gets shot down by German fighter planes. Martian Manhunter continues on their quest for knowledge while Wonder Woman stays behind with Trevor. He finds Hitler, on ice, and gets zapped by Vandal Savage with a power glove. The rest of the team have their hands full with the War Wheels. Green Lantern's ring runs out of power.

Good start to what is probably the best story from season 1. I like all the little nods, including the inclusion of Steve Trevor. The humor adds a nice touch.

Part 2

The team remains split up. Superman, Hawkgirl, and the Flash help US troops escape the war wheels that pursue them. They almost get overwhelmed but then the Blackhawks show up and lend a big hand in a fight with swarms of Luftwaffe fighter planes. They take the three superheroes back to Blackhawk island with them after the battle is over. Flash gives Hawkgirl a hard time when he learns that she left Green Lantern behind.

Green Lantern has to hustle to avoid getting killed by the Germans. He eventually runs into some troops that like him are caught behind enemy lines, Sgt. Rock and Easy Company. Most of the men seem more than willing to welcome John Stewart into their ranks but Bulldozer gives GL a hard time from the first time they meet.

Martian Manhunter escapes from Vandal Savage's clutches. He sticks around long enough to learn how the villain was able to build weapons that are much too advanced for World War II.

Wonder Woman stays with Steve Trevor. They are looking for Ernst, a scientist who has the secrets to something or other. They find him but it turns out to be a trap. The episode ends the same one way the last one did with War Wheels bearing down on the good guys.

This is still good fun even if some of the animation seems a bit off. I'm not enough of an expert to explain it in detail but there are quite a few moments where the law of physics don't seem to apply. The inclusion of Easy Company and the Blackhawks brings a smile to my face. I'm pretty sure the War Wheels first appeared in a Blackhawk comic book. I like the tension between Flash and Hawkgirl. She clearly feels bad about leaving Green Lantern behind but Flash doesn't give her much of a chance to explain until she does.

Part 3

The Justice League finally figure out what Vandal Savage is planning. He is going to invade the United States of America using giant jet planes. Green Lantern gets some more help from Sgt Rock and Easy Company. He manages to sneak on the jet plane the Vandal Savage is on. He damages the plane but then he comes face to face with the villain. Green Lantern does his best but without his power ring he is no match for Vandal Savage's power glove. Hawkgirl rescues him in the end just before the plane crashes into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Blackhawks also lend a hand. They help to take down part of the fleet of jet planes. They also destroyed the factory where the jets were constructed, with some help from Superman and Hawkgirl.

Wonder Woman sticks with Steve Trevor until they learn that the Vandal Savage is headed for the United States.

The heroes return to the present and discover that their actions in the past have restored the world. Batman recognizes them and vice versa. Wonder Woman goes to visit Steve Trevor who is now an old man but he still recognizes her.

Thoughts

This is not a perfect episode but it has a lot of moments that I like. This is a great way to wrap up the season.
