Dear White People 1.01

Chapter I

Samantha White, leader of the Black Student Union at elite Winchester University exposes a blackface party on campus sponsored by Pastiche, the school's humor magazine, but all is not as it seems. The party was planned as a reaction to her campus radio program, Dear White People. The party (Dear Black People) was shut down before it happened by the university administration but somehow invitations went out anyway.

Sam has a secret of her own that she's managed to keep from everyone, she has a white lover. She tries to smooth things over by bringing Gabe, to Defamation Wednesdays. Members of all four black student groups (BSU, AASU, BAF, CORE) on campus get together to watch the Defamation an imitation of Scandal. It doesn't go well but it could have gone worse. Gabe doesn't stay for more than 10 minutes. He leaves after his presence gets challenged by one of the other leaders of the BSU.

Samantha finds out that someone figured out that she's the one who broke into Pastiche's Facebook group and posted the invite to the blackface party. Given a choice she decides to come clean and out herself. She goes to the campus radio station and forces her way on air. She admits on the air to having posted the invitation for the blackface party and made it look like Pastiche did it.

Thoughts

This episode flowed very quickly. It took a couple viewings for me to pick up on all the details. Maybe if I had watched the 2014 movie of the same name or had done some research before watching this episode then I might not have needed to watch it twice.

It is unclear to me at this point how much from this episode will be followed up on in future ones. I'm guessing that there will be follow up but I just can't tell at this point.

I wasn't immediately taken by the show but I think that's due in large part to the large degree of information thrown out in this episode. I got more into it the further I got into it. I'm at the very least intrigued and ready to watch more.
