GLOW 3.01

Up, Up, Up

I don't know how I avoided the spoilers but I was genuinely surprised, shocked, and saddened by the way the episode opened. There is an oblique reference to what happened on the day that GLOW opens in Vegas in the description of the first episode but I was completely unaware of it. I stayed unaware until they showed Bash and Rhonda getting ready to watch the launch of the Challenger.

Most of the women were watching TV at the time but Liberty Belle and Zoya were on a local TV station's broadcast. Zoya was talking trash about the U.S. space program until it happened.

There is some consideration given as to whether they should postpone opening night. They consult with Sandy Devereaux St. Clair (Geena Davis), the owner of the casino. They wind up going on. The rest of the episode is given over to their preparations for opening night.

The episode ends with them getting ready for the party after opening night. The original theme of the party was going to be the space program. Bash had a cake made that has a model of the Challenger on it.

Thoughts

It felt so good to get back to this show. I really enjoyed watching the various characters come together again in a new setting. There are things that were left unresolved at the end of the previous season. I look forward to seeing how those situations evolve. I'm thinking of things like Debbie's and Ruth's relationship, Ruth's and Sam's relationship, and Bash's sexual orientation.

I did get choked up once I realized that the launch of the Challenger figured into the episode. I have mixed feelings about how they used it. Ultimately I think it was a good call.
