Edward the Conqueror
starring Wendy Hiller, Joseph Cotten
directed by Rodney Bennett
Louisa (Wendy Hiller) takes in a cat, against her husband Edward's (Joseph Cotten) wishes. The manner in which the cat responds to the music she plays on the piano leads her believe that it is the reincarnation of Franz Liszt. Edward isn't convinced by the arguments and evidence that she produces. He takes the cat outside. Louisa thinks he killed it so she kills him, with a large carving knife. The cat returns after Edward is dead.
I'm not sure why this episode was called Edward the Conqueror. Presumably that's the title of the story upon which it was based but there was nothing in the episode that seemed to explain the title.
I don't hate this episode but I do feel as if it didn't go anywhere. Minutes before it ended I had no idea where it was going.
Notes
I've seen Wendy Hiller before in A Man for All Seasons (1966). She was in one episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955).
I recently saw Joseph Cotten in an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955), 1.07 Breakdown.
