Luke Cage 2.01

Soul Brother #1

All sorts of things are set in motion in this episode. Most of the players are back from last season including the ones who also showed up in Defenders.

James Lucas, Cage's father becomes part of the story in this episode. He is played by Reg E. Cathey, who died before the season dropped. Looking ahead I can see that he appears in about half the episodes in this season. I've got no idea if that is the first half or every other episode or what. There is one scene with him early in the episode. He is a preacher and in that scene he is preaching about Luke, but not before an audience. Later in the episode he meets up with Luke, whom he insists on calling Carl, the name Luke was given at birth. It is not a pleasant reunion.

Someone is selling drugs on the street which are stamped with Luke's name. Naturally, Luke takes offense to it. There is also an app that allows people to follow Luke. There's also someone following Luke around taping him. I'm guessing that won't last or Luke will use it to his advantage at some point to fool one of the baddies.

Black Mariah and Shades return. The club has been rebuilt and reopened. Luke pays them a visit at but he is forced to back off after discovering that they have Claire Temple. He leaves with Claire but he worries about her safety.

There's a new villain in town, Bushmaster. He doesn't do anything too impressive until the end of the episode when he takes down another gangster. He is bulletproof.

Arturo Rey, another gangster, tries killing Luke. First he tries using a bomb and then he tries Judas bullets. Neither do the trick. Luke hands him over the to police.

Misty returns. She is missing an arm. She lost the arm in Defenders 1.08. She spends most of the episode trying to accept life as a civilian but eventually she returns to work at the NYPD after seeing Cockroach, a convict, out on the streets. Cockroach is played by the husband of the actress who plays Misty. He along with about 30 others were released after it was revealed that Misty's former partner, Scarf, was secretly working for the mob.

All in all this was a decent episode. I don't love every performance. Mariah is downright creepy. Watching her and shades get it on makes my skin crawl. If that's the vibe they were going for then they scored. They may get some kind of a thrill out of getting hot and heavy with one another but I don't get the impression that there is any real love there. There's a lot thrown against the wall in this episode. That's not unusual in for a season opener. I hope the next one is a little more focused.
