2024

Movies

Goals

  • I don't think that I will watch significantly more movies than I did in 2023. I am going to shoot for an average of 7-10 movies per month or around 80-120 movies for the year. The total number of movies isn't as important to me as the mix of movies.
  • I would like to watch 5-7 from each decade from the 1930s to the 2020s.
  • I would like to try to expand the diversity of the foreign language films I watch. I would like to try and see at least one movie each from Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. I think that  the Noir City DC Film Festival should help in that regards if the slate for NCFF in January in San Francisco is any indication of what to expect to be showing at the DC edition of the festival in October.
  • I would like to watch more animated films from Japan. I'm not sure what else is out there but there are probably other animated films in languages other than Japanese that I should try.
  • I would like to watch more animated films in English, including some older ones from 1970s and 1980s.
  • I would like to try and watch a few musicals. They aren't exactly my cup of tea but I would like watch a few even if they are just ones that I have seen before.
  • I would like to watch more documentaries
  • I would like to watch more films that star and/or were made by non-White people in English and other languages
  • I would like to watch some English language films from countries other than just the US, UK, and Australia
Here's the list of movies I watched in 2024 in the order in which they were released. See my Movies by Date Watched page for a list of all the movies I have watched in 2024 in the order in which I watched them.

Debrief
  • I watched more movies than I thought I would in 2024 (140), the overwhelming majority (over 92%) of them were films that I had not seen before. The jump from 2022 to 2023 was much bigger but I still managed to watch about 15% more films in 2024 than I did in 2023.
  • I started and ended the year by watching foreign language films. I watched 24 (not counting foreign language animated movies) or an average of 2 per month although I saw 11 of them in October alone, thanks to the Noir City DC Film Festival. I saw movies in eleven different foreign languages including films from South America, Europe, North Africa, and Asia.
  • I saw seven foreign English language films, six from the UK and one from Australia.
  • I saw six animated films, three of which were Japanese and the other three were American.
  • I saw six documentaries, not counting all the little features that were included on DVDs that I borrowed from the library.
  • I watched seven films that won the Academy Award for Best Picture and six more that were nominated for but did not win the award.
  • I saw 27 films that starred non-White characters. Thirteen of those films were in English and the other 14 were in foreign languages.
  • I saw at least one film from every year from 1932 to 1966.
  • I saw six silent films (all from the 1920s) and at least seven movies per decade from every decade since the 1920s. I saw more films by far from the 1940s (20) and 1950s (31) than I did any other decades.
  • I saw almost twice as many films at the AFI Silver theater (61) than I did in 2023 (33). I only saw about half the number of films on DVDs that I borrowed from the library in 2024 (13) as I did in 2023 (25).

I watched some Doctor Who (1963) this year including stories from the first four Doctors. Here's the list of the stories I watched but for more about my Doctor Who viewing habits, I tend to bounce around and don't watch them strictly in order, see my Doctor Who page.

    • Tomb of the Cybermen
    • Terror of the Autons
    • The Ark in Space

At the end of December I started to watch Star Trek: The Original Series from the beginning but I only watched the first episode (The Man Trap) in 2024. For more about all the episodes I have watched in recent years see my Star Trek page.

I watched a total of 333 episodes of television in 2024. I haven't listed all of them here. There are some shows that I watched just an episode or two of that I haven't bothered to list but they can be found in the blog. Doctor Who is the show that I watched most consistently with Phil Silvers probably running a close second.
