Thoughts

You can count this among the episodes where Bilko puts on a disguise to convince someone do something.

Sherman's Showcase 1.08

Ray J's Showcase

Sherman steps into the twilight zone and finds himself trapped in world where he is a bit player on someone else's show. It takes him a minute to figure out what is going on and who is behind it all.

This is the best episode since the first couple. What took them so long to come up with another good idea for an episode? I actually felt engaged in this episode. I enjoyed the reveal towards the end of the episode. It kind of made sense.

I'm not sold on coming back to watch the second season. There were considerably more misses than hits this season. I might but I'm not leaning in that direction at the moment even though I really liked this episode.

Frida (2002)

Frida (2002)

starring Salma Hayek, Alfred Molina
directed by Julie Taymor

122 minutes

This is the story of Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek) from the time she was crippled in a bus crash until she died. Her husband Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina) plays a big part in the story. The movie is a feast visually. The threads that run through it are Frida's relationship with Diego and her artwork.

I've seen some of Frida Kahlo's artwork here and there but I am not very familiar with it. The movie in some ways feels like it was made primarily to bring Frida's artwork to the masses. I think it stretches and tries to cover a little too much ground in terms of Frida's life. It is not in my experience uncommon for biopics to do that. It does get a little exhausting, especially in the last 30-40 minutes.

I'm glad I've seen this movie. I don't love it. It didn't give me a lot to think about. It is visually stunning. I couldn't help but feel that the scenes in Mexico should have, for the most part, been in Spanish.

Sherman's Showcase 1.07

White Music

This episode is mostly about White acts that appeared on Sherman's Showcase. One of them is Sofia Salvatore. She was the first White acts to appear on Sherman's Showcase. She also (kind of, sort of) guest hosts this episode. There are four or five musical performances, including one by Sofia Salvatore. There is one by a country music act who sings a song about a raccoon that NASA sent to the Moon. There are also a few classic commercials including one that involves Frederick Douglass.

Sofia Salvatore was played by Eliza Coupe. I know her best from Future Man and Casual.

This was an okay episode. It wasn't worse than most of the other episodes but aside from a few laughs it doesn't make me want to watch more of this show, once I am done with this season.
