UnReal 3.03

Clarity

Rachel and Quinn continue to butt heads over the direction the show is headed. Quinn has the ultimate say and lets Rachel know that from here on out Serena will be produced by Madison. It doesn't last but it ultimately it causes a confrontation between Quinn and Rachel.

Serena doesn't care for the way she is being portrayed online but she reluctantly sticks with it, for a while. She is supposed to be playing the damsel in distress and the men are fighting to save her in some medieval fantasy realm. This part of the episode is not fleshed out very clearly.

Charlie, a new member of the crew starts flirting with Jeremy. He blows her off at first but by the episode he starts reciprocating the flirtatious behavior.

Jay tries to sell Quinn on an idea for a dance themed show. He gets nowhere at first. Jay shows a video of what he has in mind to Alexi, the ballet dancer who started the fight in 3.02 (Shield). He loves it. Jay isn't feeling very confident about pitching the show to Quinn a second time but after Alexi kisses him he seems to get a burst of courage.

Rachel talks to Chet about taking the show in a different direction. Together they start working on some behind the scenes interviews with the men, about feminism. Quinn gets angry when she finds out about what they are up to. She is playing it safe with the show because she wants to keep Gary, the network exec, off her back. Chet has ideas of his own. He works with one of the crew to splice together an interview with himself and Owen. He plans to leak it to the press.

Rachel figures out that Quinn has a UTI. She doesn't know how she got it but she assumes it must be because she's been getting laid. It takes a bit but eventually August's actions give away the fact that he is the one Quinn has been sexing with. Just before she makes this discovery Rachel encourages Serena to go on a date with August. She is reluctant but Serena follows Rachel's advice and has a great time.

Serena thanks Rachel for encouraging her to spend some time with August. Rachel has the opportunity to tell Serena the truth but lies to her instead and doesn't tell her about August and Quinn.

Rachel breaks up a fight between Owen (the firefighter) and Jasper (the venture capitalist). Jasper admits during the fight that he has a wager that he will win the contest. Owen wants to go to Serena and tell her about what Jasper said. Rachel talks him out of doing that by telling him that she will tell Serena herself, but she doesn't. Lies, lies, lies.

Rachel chats with Dr. Simon. She tells him how she and Jeremy are responsible for the deaths of two people in the previous season. He doesn't do anything with the information, yet, even though I was expecting him to. Rachel insists that Quinn had nothing to do with it.

There is an elimination ceremony towards the end of the episode. Three men who probably didn't have more than three lines between them get eliminated. All the players who seem like possible finalists (Owen, Jasper, August, Alexi, the race car driver, the cowboy) make it to the next round.

The cliffhanger at the end of the episode shows someone cutting August's hair as he sleeps. From the way this moment is interspersed with other scenes it doesn't look like Rachel, Quinn, or Chet are the responsible parties. My money is that either Madison or Jeremy is the responsible but I'm just not sure.

I love how Quinn shouts asides into her radio. It is like she doesn't really expect anyone to respond but it is her way of speaking her mind. This isn't contained to this episode or this season but I still find it amusing.

This season seems to be much less about the competition than the last two. I don't have a problem with that. The centerpiece of this show is Rachel and Quinn. I love watching them interact even if some of the moments didn't ring as true as I felt like they should have.

I'm still enjoying this season and eager to watch more.
