Young Justice 1.25

Usual Suspects

Act 1: The Justice League inducts 5 new members into their ranks: Plasticman, Icon, the Atom, Red Arrow, and Dr. Fate. The Heroes of Young Justice watch the public ceremony from a distance. There is one new member of their team, Rocket. They get an alert and depart before they get a chance to congratulate the new team members.

Act 2: Young Justice travels to the site where an airplane crashed. Cheshire was aboard the flight. They don't find any bodies. It's a trap. The young heroes are surrounded by a group of supervillains: Cheshire, Riddler, Shimmer, Mammoth, and some troops who are wielding weapons from Apokalips, similar to the ones seen in 1.17 (Disordered). Superboy uses the last of the shields that Lex Luthor gave him in 1.22 (Agendas). The heroes and villains fight and the heroes win.

They return to the cave with a case that Cheshire leaves behind. It contains alien technology. Batman decides to take it with him up to the Watchtower. He leaves the young heroes behind. Robin starts to ask Superboy about the powers he used during the fight. Superboy is about to respond when he gets a summons from Lex Luthor. He wants to meet with Superboy on the island of Santa Prisca. Superboy departs without saying much to his teammates, or does he?

Act 3: Superboy arrives on Santa Prisca only to find a bigger welcoming committee than he expected. Lex Luthor is there but there are also a number of other supervillains there: Bane, Sportsmaster, Cheshire, Blockbuster, Queen Bee, and plenty of troops with more weapons from Apokolips. Artemis and Miss Martian show up separately, soon after Superboy arrives.

In flashbacks it is revealed that Superboy, Artemis, and Miss Martian all revealed their secrets to their teammates before traveling to Santa Prisca. They pretend to play along with the villains briefly but a fight breaks out between the heroes and villains. The other member of Young Justice soon join the fight. The Heroes win but most of the villains, with the exception of Sportsmaster and Bane, escape.

Act 4: Batman examines the alien tech aboard the Watchtower. He isn't sure what to make of it. Icon walks up to talk to him and plants one of the alien devices on Batman's neck. Batman leaves the lab with Icon. They walk out to the meeting room. All the other heroes are standing around waiting for them. Batman gives the transporter instructions and someone beams aboard the Watchtower: Vandal Savage.

Most of the heroes stand around oblivious to the fact that a villain just arrived in their headquarters. The only one who seems disturbed is Red Arrow. Vandal Savage explains to him that he was the mole.

This episode moves very fast, probably a little too fast. I like the cliffhanger at the end but there are some moments leading up to it that get glossed over a little too quickly for my tastes. It was a bit let down to have the three compromised teammates (Artemis, Superboy, Miss Martian) reveal their secrets in flashback and without any backlash from the rest of the team.

It is unclear how Red Arrow was the mole. Maybe that will get explained in the next episode but for the moment that reveal leaves me scratching my head. I am glad they didn't leave some of the reveals until the final episode even if I wasn't crazy about impact of the reveals.

Rocket made cameo appearances in four episodes prior to this one. This episode does not revolve around her but she gets considerably more screen time than in all her previous appearances.

Overall a decent penultimate episode. I like it more after I stop to think about it but I don't love it.
