Star Trek: Enterprise 2.02

Carbon Creek

T'Pol tells Archer and Trip a story about T'Mir, her great-grandmother. It is the story of the first contact between Humans and Vulcans, in a town called Carbon Creek, PA. There isn't really a town called Carbon Creek but some of the events and things mentioned in the episode are real. The Vulcans were there to observe Sputnik, Earth's first man-made satellite.

The Vulcan ship malfunctioned and the crew was forced to crash land on Earth. The captain was killed in the landing. The other three members of the crew survive the landing. T'Mir assumes command. The Vulcans try to avoid contact with humans but they run out food and reluctantly head for the nearest town. Before they crashed they sent out a distress signal but there is no way for them to know if the message was successfully sent.

Stron and Mestral, the other two Vulcan don't agree about avoiding humans. Stron follows T'Mir's orders as closely as possible but Mestral does not. He goes on a date with the woman who owns the town's bar, enjoys watching I Love Lucy, and becomes quite attached to life on Earth. When their time on Earth finally comes to an end he does not want to leave.

The episode ends with T'Pol insisting that it is just a story which leaves Archer and Trip wondering if she just made the whole thing up. Before the credits roll there is visual evidence that it really happened.

This is a decent episode but it feels like a half told story. I'm not sure I would place it on the list of must watch episodes. It has it's moments but on the whole it is just good and not great.
