1984 (1984)

Starring John Hurt, Richard Burton, Suzanna Hamilton, Cyril Cusack
Directed by Michael Radford

A very bleak view of what is now the past (that never happened) but at the time the book was written (1948) was the future. Smith (Hurt) is a man who like many lives out a very bleak existence in a very bleak world. The world is at war. Citizens on the home front, like Smith, are only given limited information all of which seems to be controlled by a central authority. There are two-way view screens everywhere. Life seems very oppressive.

I gave up on this movie after watching about 45 minutes of it. I chose instead to listen to a podcast about it. That's when I learned that this movie a very tough slog for people who haven't read the book. There a lot of background information that is left out of the movie. Having a general knowledge of book isn't enough. The podcast was interesting but not enough to convince me to give the movie another try.
