The Smudging
Sam makes a list of the things he is good at for his group therapy. He volunteers to read the list. It is supposed to help him pick a college, but it doesn't. He turns to Zahid for help. Z comes up with a bunch of things Sam didn't think about. Paige suggests that he apply to Bowdoin because that's where she is going. Sam turns to Casey for help but as she points out he needs to decide for himself. He can't just continue to do what other people tell him.
Casey has problems of her own, which stem from the events in the previous episode. She tries to tell Izzy about what happened with Nate. Izzy asks Nate about what happened. He claims that Casey is the one who kissed him. The next day Casey finds that someone has written SLUT and HO on the toes of her track shoes. She tries scrubbing the writing off but it won't come off. Elsa finds the shoes. She buys Casey some new shoes.
Doug goes to the police station and talks to the officer who arrested Sam. He knows him. He doesn't make a lot of progress in convincing the officer that he should have handled the situation differently. Doug decides that he and Elsa need to prepare a training class for first responders on how to deal with people with autism. Elsa is secretly very happy that Doug wants to do something with her.
Elsa decides to try to repair the hole that Doug punched in the wall. She accidentally drops her smart phone in the hole. Ethan helps her to get it out and fix the hole.
Julia doesn't have any face-to-face interactions with anyone else on the show. She does get several voice mails from Sam. She calls Doug. She tells him about the voice mails and expresses concern over Sam's encounter with the police. These scenes seem to be there in part to show how her pregnancy is progressing.
Paige flips out when she finds Sam hanging out with Bailey, a female classmate. Bailey is smoking. Paige smells the smoke and pulls the fire alarm. Sam was supposed to be meeting with Ms. Whitaker to tell her which universities he wants to apply to. He couldn't decide so he hid in the art supply room and was drawing when Bailey walked in. She liked his drawings and asked him to draw something on her arm.
This was a very good episode. It was nice to see Doug get to do a little more. I didn't mind that Elsa didn't have quite as big a part as she often does. Casey's part was hard to watch because it was painful.
