Movies

Goals

• I am going to shoot for an average of 7-10 movies per month or around 80-120 movies for the year. The total number of movies isn't as important to me as the mix of movies.
• I would like to watch 5-7 from each decade from the 1920s to the 2020s. Last year I watched at least one movie from every year from 1932 to 1966. This year I would like to try and watch at least one movie from every year in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
• I would like to try to expand the diversity of the foreign language films I watch. I would like to try and see at least one movie each from Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. I don't think that  the Noir City DC Film Festival will help me in this regard as it did in 2024.
• I would like to watch at least 3 animated films from Japan. I'm not sure what else is out there but there are probably other animated films in languages other than Japanese that I should try.
• I would like to watch more animated films in English, including some older ones from 1970s and 1980s.
• I would like to try and watch a few musicals. They aren't exactly my cup of tea but I would like watch a few.
• I would like to watch more documentaries
• I would like to watch more films that star and/or were made by non-White people in English and other languages
• I would like to watch some English language films from countries other than just the US, UK, and Australia

Debrief

• I watched 126 movies this year, or 10.5 movies per month. I didn't watch as many films as I did in 2024 but I achieved my goal in terms of the total numbers of films I watched. Four out of every five movies I saw (79.4% to be precise) were ones I had not seen before.
• I watched 25 foreign films, 20 of which were in a language other than English. I saw films in nine languages other than English. Two of those languages (Polish, Kyrgyz) are ones that were not previously found in the list of movies I have seen. I did not see any films from Africa, South America, or the Middle East in 2025.
• I watched five animated films in 2025. Four of them were in Japanese and the other was in English. Three of the four in Japanese were from Studio Ghibli.
• I saw seven documentaries, not counting all the little features that were included on DVDs that I borrowed from the library.
• I watched three films in 2025 that won the Academy Award for Best Picture and eleven more that were nominated for Best Picture. Two of the three that won and six of the eleven that were nominated I had seen before but it was at least 18 years since I last watched any of them.
• I watched 17 films that starred non-White characters. Eight of those films were in English and the other nine were in other languages.
• I watched at least one film from every year from 1944 to 2003.
• I watched four silent films, three of them starred Buster Keaton and the other starred Harold Lloyd.
• I watched at least seven films from every decade from the 1940s to the 2020s. I watched four films each from the 1920s and 1930s.
• I watched 55 films on streaming services, 47 at the AFI Silver Theater, and 22 on DVDs that I borrowed from the library.
