Atypical 2.10

Earnest Shackleton's Rules for Survival

Sam graduates from high school. He decides that he has to start acting independently of everyone including his family. This leads to some funny moments and a tragic one. Maybe tragic is putting it a bit too strongly but it does cause Sam to lose his cool.

Casey avoids Izzy for most of the episode. She spends time with Evan and spends time with Evan. Elsa tries telling her about an experience that she had with another woman when she was younger. Casey doesn't want to hear it.

Doug goes to see Nick and punches him. Nick accepts it. Doug injured his hand but he tries to play it off like it was an accident that happened on the job. Elsa eventually discovers the truth about his injury, but not until just before Sam's graduation ceremony. She wants to talk. Doug says he does too but instead of talking to her he goes to see Megan.

Sam tries to act more independently. This leads him to ask people he doesn't really know to sign his yearbook. He gets it back only to discover that someone has written "Spaz" and "Freak" next to his picture. He is very distressed and tries to get another yearbook but he can't. He backs off of his quest for absolute independence after this experience, with some help from his family.

Paige is the class valedictorian and is supposed to give a speech at graduation. She can't because she is hoarse. It is revealed, in flashbacks, that she lost her voice screaming at her classmates. She was angry at them for writing what hurtful things in Sam's yearbook. Sam doesn't know that. He gets up and gives her speech for her, in his own style of course. Everyone is there: Mom, Dad, Casey, Evan, Zahid, and Julia. It is a big success.

Casey finally spends some time with Izzy. They drive four towns away to get slurpees. Casey tells Izzy about how she had sex with Evan and makes a big deal about it. Izzy seems hurt but the two end up holding hands .

Sam tells Paige the night after graduation, in an off-handed way, that he thinks he is love with her.

I wish that Zahid and Julia had more to do but I was glad to see that at the very least they both were there and were more than just there: they both got scenes alone with Sam before graduation. I was really very pleased with this episode and with the season as a whole. I got a little choked up or misty-eyed on more than one occasion, watching this episode. I'm ready for a break but I hope that there will be more.
