Starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas
Directed by Peyton Reed
Scott Lang (Rudd) has been under house arrest for a couple years, ever since the end of Captain America: Civil War. He has had no contact with Hope Van Dyne (Lilly) or Hank Pym (Douglas). He has just three days to go until his sentence of house arrest will be over when he has a dream about Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), Hope's mother.
Scott calls Hank Pym but no one answers. He leaves a message and then sits down to watch TV. He wakes up in a van with Hope. She is taking him to see Hank, her father. They want to know more about the dream he had. He tells them and they become convinced that Janet is still alive. They think that Janet placed a message in Scott's brain when he was in the Quantum Realm.
Hank and Hope have already built a doorway to the Quantum Realm. It just needs one more component to be operational. They take Scott with them. Hope goes to get the component from Sonny Burch (Walton Goggins), their contact, but he has changed his mind about selling it to them. Hope has to use the suit her father built her to try and take it from Burch and his men. She takes them all down but then someone else shows up.
This other person is a ghost like presence who proves to be too much for Hope. Scott gets a suit from Hank and joins the fight but they are unsuccessful in preventing Ghost from taking the component and their lab, which they shrank and had with them in their van. Desperate to find the lab they turn to Bill Foster, an old associate of Hank's. Hank and Bill aren't exactly on great terms but Hope and Scott do most of the talking.
Foster gives them an idea about how to track down the stolen lab, which they follow through on. Before they can execute the plan they have to break into Cassie's school. Cassie is Scott's daughter. She unknowingly took Scott's old suit with her. Using the tech from the old suit they are able to locate the lab, which is in Ghost's home. Ghost, aka Ava, once again proves to be a little too much for Scott and Hope. She captures them plus Hank.
It turns out that Ava's father was also an associate of Dr. Pym. He was killed in the experiment that gave Ava her powers. Foster is working with Ava, trying to help her. He estimates that she doesn't have long to live. Ava blames Pym for her father's death and what happened to her because Pym got her father fired from SHIELD.
Scott, Hank and Hope escape and take the lab with them. This part was a little murky. One minute Ghost overpowers them all and the next they escape with the lab and she can't do anything to stop them. Something seems a bit off about this development.
The best part of the movie is the humor. I can't argue with that. The rest of it is a little too much for me. I don't understand why Ghost or Bill Foster needed to be in this movie. I get a little tired of the stunt casting. I wasn't a big fan of Ant-Man and I'm not a big fan of this one. I'm still waiting for something to come along that will impress me more than Captain America: Civil War or at least rise to the same level.
