I watched the Valentine's Day episode 2 days after Valentine's Day. How serendipitous. There is a Valentine's Day party at the prison. It is organized by the kitchen staff.
Larry comes to see Piper. She's happy to see him. She wants to talk about when she gets out. He isn't overjoyed to see her or to chat. He tries talking to her about corruption at Litchfield. They get into a fight and he storms out.
Vee's girls, especially Watson, don't like working custodial. Taystee doesn't want to leave the library. She likes working there with Poussey. She doesn't understand what Vee is up to but she feels as thought she has to follow her orders.
Red's son smuggles some contraband into the prison via the tunnel under the greenhouse. Red starts handing out the stuff she gets. She's trying to win her way back into everyone's good graces. It works with some but not with others. Murphy and Romano won't accept the gifts.
Poussey gets the backstory spotlight. She's an army brat. Her father was stationed in Germany. She fell in love with Franziska, a German girl, whose father was in the German Army. Franziska's father walked in on them, in bed together. The next day her father got orders sending him back to the United States. She acts cold toward Franziska but doesn't want to leave. She is about to do something really stupid when her father stops her. There is no reveal of what got her convicted.
Caputo invites Fischer to come see his band play on Valentine's Day. She is supposed to be on duty but he gets the schedules changed. Healy winds up taking her place. She shows up for the gig but she isn't alone. She brings three of their coworkers with her. Caputo is crushed.
Chapman starts her own informal investigation despite not acting interested in Larry's idea of writing an article about corruption at Litchfield. She gets caught by Healy. She says wants to start a newsletter for the prison. She thinks it will improve things for everyone there. He is skeptical but he agrees to think about it. She starts asking other prisoners what love is to them. There are lots of scenes of prisoners answering the question, prior to them showing her asking someone the question.
Bennett gets backed into a corner. He starts talking to Daya a little more openly in the kitchen. Aleida, Daya's mother, gives him a list of things she wants him to smuggle in for her. It wasn't shown before but it was hinted that he smuggled supplements into Dayanara to help her with her pregnancy. It doesn't end there. Flaca, Maritza, and one of the other women working in the kitchen ask him to get them stuff too. If he doesn't they might talk. He's not in a good place.
Suzanne finds a piece of discarded mail. It is a wedding invitation from Christopher. She tries talking to Morello and tells her that she understands about unrequited love, or words to that affect. Morello is grateful for the understanding but it looks like Suzanne is falling for her.
Pennsatuckey finds out how Leanne and the others feel about her now. She confronts Leanne in the middle of the party. Leanne lets her know that they are tired of her dictatorship of their group. Doggett walks off and winds up sharing a bench outside with Healy. He gives her half of his cookie. She hugs him.
Larry pack up all of Piper's stuff and takes it to Polly. He runs into her in the lobby of her building. He kisses her. She's stunned. Before she can say anything her husband shows up. They are about to go out on a Valentine's date and ask him to leave the stuff with the door man.
Jimmy, one one of the Golden Girls, wanders off in the middle of the party. She was asking everyone if they had seen Jack. He was supposed to come see her. She walks outside without a coat on. I thought for sure she was going to turn up dead, frozen to death. Instead she shows up at the bar where Side Boob, Caputo's band, is playing. My guess is that she got out through the tunnel that Red's son used to smuggle stuff in to the prison.
I loved the scene where Soso tried to explain her theory about Ferris Bueller's Day Off to Burset, while they were standing very close to Sister Jane.
Nickels and Big Boo call off their bet after discovering that they are tied.
Flaca and Maritza make out briefly.
Daya and Bennet sneak off in the middle of the party and have sex.
What effect is Suzanne's new infatuation going to have? She seemed to be doing better since Vee took her under her wing. I don't think Morello is going to reciprocate the feelings that Suzanne seems to have for her.
Will Caputo and Healy allow Chapman's newsletter to expose Figueroa's use of government funds for her own personal needs? I've got a feeling that either of them would be happy to see Figueroa taken down a notch or twelve.
What's next for Larry and Polly? They aren't exactly a couple regardless of what he wants. I hope they don't just drop it here. There's plenty of room for things to get messy and interesting.
I liked this episode a lot more than the last one. There were lots of interesting developments and it felt more cohesive than the last one; much more in line, quality-wise, with the first four of the season.
