Low Self Esteem City
The plumbing in the bathroom that the Latinas use starts backing up. This leads to other problems. Caputo gets an outside plumber to come in and evaluate the situation. Figueroa gets angry when she finds out about it. Her husband is running for office and as far as she is concerned Litchfield doesn't have the money to fix the problem.
The fact the that Mendoza and the Latinas run the kitchen gives her a little bit of pull with the prison administration. The Latinas impose on the Black prisoners, with the administration's blessing.
Piper gets a visit from her mother and brother. She has to pull it out of them but they reveal that her grandmother is very ill. She goes to Healy in the hopes of getting a furlough to visit her grandmother. He shoots that idea down pretty quickly. She asks him, as she is heading out the door why he didn't do anything about the fight with Doggett. He denies that he was there.
Mendoza gets the backstory spotlight. She ran a convenience store in New York City, from the looks of it. She was committing fraud by taking food stamps for alcohol purchases. She was having problems with the father of her children. He was unemployed and physically abusive towards her and her kids. She gets arrested for fraud and goes to prison. He dies in a fire. This was one of the least interesting flashbacks that I have seen. It seemed very by the numbers and didn't seem to link in very strongly with what was going on with Mendoza in the present.
Healy asks Red for advice. He wants to take his wife out to dinner. He can't decide whether to take her to a high school play or an Italian restaurant. Red suggests he go with the restaurant. His wife isn't receptive to the idea. She wants to spend time with her friend.
Nickels' and Big Boo's competition continues. Chang is the judge. Different women in the prison have point values assigned to them. Chapman is a 3. Guards are a 10. Nickels sets her eyes on Fischer but when she tries sweet talking the guard she runs into a brick wall. There is no sign of Soso in this episode.
Healy runs into Caputo in a bar. Caputo is part of a three man band, called Side Boob. Healy is smarting from something his wife said, that he has no friends. He really seems to light up spending time with Caputo. He is in such a good mood the next day that he reverses his earlier decision and agrees to put Chapman in for a furlough.
Vee's girls start causing problems for the kitchen staff. Something is brewing between the two groups. Black Cindy and Watson come closer to getting thrown in the SHU. Mendoza has a chat with Vee, who gets uncharacteristically conciliatory. It was really strange seeing her act that way. It looks like it was all an act. She got Mendoza to ask for help in the kitchen from two of the black inmates. Red sees all this and tells Mendoza that she made a mistake.
Piper calls Larry, after Healy lets her know about his change of mind on the furlough request. She has to ask him if she can stay with him while she is out. It's a weird conversation. He mentions that he's been hanging out with Polly but doesn't go into too much detail. I wonder why?
There wasn't anything about this episode that really gripped me. It flew by but not much stuck with me. It feels like a bridge to more interesting developments. It is probably my least favorite episode so far this season. It isn't bad but it just failed to really hit me in a meaningful way.
