Cowboy Bebop 1.21

Boogie Woogie Feng Shui

The Bebop travels to Mars after Jet gets a message from Pao, an old acqaintance. He quickly finds out that Pao is dead. He goes to visit Pao's grave. He meets Meifa, Pao's teenage daughter. They are chased from the cemetery and around town by two men who start shooting at them.

Meifa uses Feng Shui to help them get away. She explains Feng Shui as being the balance of forces, specifically the earth, the sky, and the force that exists in living things. She also explains that she is looking for the sun stone. There is a clue in the letter that Pao sent to Jet.

He takes Meifa back to the Bebop. Spike and Faye speculate about Meifa's identity. Is she Jet's girlfriend or his love child?

Jet and Meifa go back out and look for the sun stone. They eventually find it but the guys who were chasing them earlier also find them. Jet gets the drop on the bad guys and takes them out of the picture. Jet and Meifa go back to the Bebop unsure what to do with the sun stone.

It isn't long before Meifa gets an idea. The sun stone will lead them to her father. He was an employee of a criminal syndicate. He disappeared while traveling through one of the star gates. She's convinced that he isn't dead. The Bebop leaves Mars and goes where the sun stone leads them, through one of the gates. They are chased but Spike and Faye deal with the ship that pursues them.

They find Pao in a ship that is trapped within the gate. They are unable to rescue him but he gets to see his daughter one last time.

If I wanted to be nit picky I think I could find some holes in this episode.

I really like the pairing of Jet and Meifa in the search for Pao. Jet is very nuts and bolts. She is very centered around what I think of as mystical energy. I like the balance. The story is nicely paced. The music is wonderful. The reunion of father and daughter was very touching. I didn't really recall this episode but I think it it one of my favorites.
