It Was the Change
Hurricane or Tropical Storm Wanda causes all sorts of problems for Litchfield. The roof is leaking in places. The prisoners have to be moved from their cells in the lower levels to ones that aren't as severly impacted by the storm. Luschek, Chapman, and Nickels are tasked with fixing some of the problems. They discover that the pumps that are there to clear water out of the building don't have any fuel.
Poussey gets revenge on Vee. She finds their stash of tobacco and destroys it. She pours it all over the ground and then douses it in Clorox. Vee responds by cutting Taystee out of her gang. She told her that she was going to hold her responsible for Poussey's action and she did. Vee also gets the backstory spotlight.
Over the course of three or four flashbacks it is revealed that Vee has a semi-incestuous relationship with RJ, one of the boys she adopted and who works for her, and then gets a cop to kill him. She got word from the cop early in the flashbacks that RJ was trying to leave her. She confirms the fact, seduces him, and then sets up a scenario wherein it is easy for a cop to kill him in cold blood. RJ's death was a plot point in the backstory spotlight in 2.02 (Looks Blue, Tastes Red) but at that point it wasn't clear that Vee was behind it.
Doggett has a chap with Healy. She's concerned about Boo, whose mattress is next to hers in the temporary set up. Healy warns her about lesbians and how they are conspiring to take over the world. He shows her The End of Men by Hannah Rosin. This is his proof. He's convinced that it is a blueprint for the lesbian agenda.
Everyone is stuck in Litchfield, even the staff, except Fig who conveniently got away before the power went out. They can't get the gates to open without the power. Some people make the best of it while others wallow in misery. Soso gets a lot of the women to join in a sing-a-long.
Red has to decide what to do about Taslitz unsuccessful attempt on Vee's life. The woman she stabbed isn't dead but Taslitz has been sent to the SHU. Berlin, the tattooed golden girl, wants her to double down and tell Vee that it was a warning shot. Red thinks she can talk her way through it. That doesn't work. Red gets desperate. She tries killing Vee but at the last minute she can't go through with it. Red and Vee share a moment, shake hands, and agree to keep what just happened to themselves.
Fig is busy with a fundraising party for her husband. Caputo calls several times to inform her and complain about the conditions at Litchfield. She doesn't pick up until after he has called numerous times. She tells him to suck it up. A bit of her background is revealed in the conversation. She jumped from being a secretary to the assistant warden thanks in part to the massages she gave. Even thought she is very focused on her husband's campaign it is also clear that he is still using her. She knows it and isn't happy about it. She helps him to host a fundraising party, despite her displeasure with him.
Bennett and Dayanara talk. She tells him that she can feel the baby moving. Things seem better between them, for a moment, but it is clear that he still isn't thinking clearly. Mendez still thinks that he is the father because Bennett has yet to stand up and take responsibility for what he did. Dayanara tries talking him into doing so even though it will probably mean jail time for him.
Chapman is still distressed over her upcoming transfer. She's sure that Figueroa is the one behind the transfer and that this is payback for her attempts to harm the assistant warden's career. Chapman takes advantage of the blackout. She breaks into Fig's office. She grabs a file. The power comes back on at that moment. She quickly leaves the office and runs into Caputo. He wants to know what she's up to. My guess is that he will take the file and use the information in it to get Figueroa fired or at least he will try to do that.
Red starts to clean up the green house after the storm. She is too focused on the task at hard and doesn't hear the door open. Vee walks in and strikes her from behind with a solid object in the toe of a pair of pantyhose. Red falls to the ground still conscious. Vee strikes her again.
This was another top notch episode. There were some interesting developments but it looks like they are saving most of the fireworks for the 92 minute season finale.
