Orange Is the New Black 2.09

40 Oz. of Furlough

Piper is released for 48 hours. She is under strict orders. Cal, her brother, picks her up. He takes her to see Larry. It is an awkward reunion. Neither of them seem to be all that thrilled to see the other.

Red and Vee get the backstory spotlight. They arrived in Litchfield around the same time. Vee quickly took over. She was friendly to Red, at first, but that didn't last. Red shared the fact that she had a way to smuggle contraband into the prison. Vee took advantage of that knowledge and insisted that Red work for her. When Red balked she had her beat up, badly.

Piper starts drinking at the viewing for her grandmother. Alcohol is one of the things that she is not supposed to touch. She tries seducing Larry. She corners him in a bathroom. She gives it a good shot but he is a little too sober to be interested. He admits to her that he's had sex with someone she knows but he doesn't tell her anything more than that.

Healy starts to see a therapist. He hates his job. He hates most things in his life. Later in the episode he has a chat with Doggett. She's there because she attacked Taylor. Healy suggests that he might be able to help her if she comes to see him once a week. He's not a trained social worker. He's trying to do the right thing but I think that he is out of his depth here.

Red sends the Golden Girls to the kitchen to get some supplies. They intimidate Mendoza's staff and get what Red sent them to get. Red uses the supplies to throw a little party for her "friends". She apologizes to Romano and Murphy. Everyone seems happy except Boo. She acts happy but maybe that's because she accidentally discovers how Red is sneaking in contraband.

Piper and Cal deliver the eulogy for their grandmother. Cal takes the opportunity to announce that he and Neri, his girlfriend, are getting married that day. Her parents are there and a friend who just got ordained, and a bunch of their friends. His parents are stunned. It was a bit surreal but it was also very funny.

Poussey gets word that Vee and her girls are selling something more lethal that tobacco. She's working for Vee now, taking orders and distributing cigarettes. She confronts Taystee about the rumor but Taystee is too loyal to Vee to tell her anything. It turns out that the rumors are correct. Poussey sees Taystee deliver a sample to Nickels, towards the end of the episode, of what is presumably some grade of heroin.

Boo goes to Vee and bargains with her. She tells her that she knows how Red is smuggling goods into the prison. She wants a cut of the money that is being made off cigarette sales. Vee agrees and Boo whispers in her ear.

Bennett is unhappy about the fact that Mendez has returned. He goes to Caputo to complain but Caputo can't do anything. He suggests that Bennett needs to step up and do something. Bennett goes on a tear, harassing inmates for what seems to be minor violations of rules. He really loses it when he finds a cigarette butt. He starts going through inmates' personal belongings in the cell block close to where he found the butt. Mendez has to restrain him.

Piper goes to check on Red's shop. She finds the spot but it is permanently closed. There is a sign in the window indicating that the place is available to lease. She goes out, gets some fast food, a 40 oz. bottle of malt liquor and enjoys what seems like it is probably her last night of freedom for a while.

Bennett goes to Caputo. He tells Caputo that Dayanara is pregnant and that Mendez is the father. He had discussed this plan with Dayanara earlier in the episode. She shot it down and insisted that he not go forward with it, but he did anyway. This is where the episode ends.

This was a great episode. There was humor and drama. I loved the moment when the Golden Girls scared the kitchen staff. The funeral scene was great. The entrance that Mendez made was unreal. I wonder if Boo is really turning on Red or if she is working with Red to try and take Vee down? Will the next episode begin with Piper's return to prison or will she stay out for another episode? I really enjoyed this one. I'm eager to see how things develop from here.
