Moonlighting 1.06

The Murder's in the Mail

Roy Hirsch, a CIA operative, returns to the US only to discover that the flight he was originally scheduled to take crashed, killing everyone aboard. He heads home but something one of his neighbors tells him in the lobby of his building leads him to suspect that someone is trying to kill him. Hirsch leaves without entering his apartment.

Maddie and David squabble over bills. He reveals that he has found some more work for them collecting bills for a collection agency. The second person they go to collect from turns out to be Roy Hirsch. He is home by then but he is murdered between the time he buzzes them in and the time they get up to his apartment. Maddie and David try to get the police involved but the killer has already covered his tracks and moved the body.

Maddie and David later sneak into the apartment from the fire escape. They find an envelope behind a mirror. It has a letter written in Russian. Their investigation gets interrupted by someone else who is also looking for the letter. That guy and the killer chase David and Maddie. The killer crashes but the other buy, who turns out to be with the CIA, finally catches up to them.

Maddie and David give him the letter. He thanks them and leaves. David sees a flaw in the CIA agent's story. They head to a dinner for Chinese diplomats. They suspect that the "CIA" agent is going to try and kill someone at the dinner. David and Maddie dress up as wait staff. They prevent anyone at the dinner from getting murdered and find themselves in the middle of a huge food fight.

Thoughts

This episode ended very abruptly. There was no real resolution or explanation as to what was going on in the end.

I'm still a little confused as to who Roy Hirsch and the other CIA agent were really working for or if they were indeed agents of the CIA or even on the same side, which ever side that might be.

There is a kind of ridiculous moment when Maddie and David first try to get into the dinner hall under their real names. They get into an argument with security detail at the door that is all done in rhyme but all three of them take it very seriously, especially the security detail.

There are some big holes in this story but I really enjoyed it. This had to be the funniest episode of the season. It was also my favorite episode of the season. The food fight was wild and crazy. As with the plot to kill the Chinese diplomat there was no real explanation as to why it happened. Someone threw a plate of food and then everyone was throwing plates of food.
