Epidemiology

A zombie infestation begins at the Greendale Halloween party. The cause of the infestation is the food that Dean Pelton bought at a surplus store. The infected spread the infection by biting others. The Dean escapes the building but locks everyone inside whether they are infected or not. The uninfected fight for their lives but one by one they get bit by their infected colleagues.

Thoughts

It's been a while since I last watched an episode of this show. This was a fun but not great episode. I liked the costumes but the premise of the episode left something to be desired. This was not awful but it wasn't all that great either.

Messianic Myths and Ancient Peoples

Shirley wants Abed to make a Christian movie to stream on YouTube. He says no but then changes his mind. The movie he makes isn't what Shirley had in mind. Pierce starts hanging out with some other senior citizens on the Greendale campus.

I really started to get into this one once Abed got the bug. He took Shirley's idea and then ran with it in a different direction. He makes a very meta-movie in which everything that happens on set is okay. It doesn't matter if someone interrupts filming, like Shirley does at one point, because it is all part of the movie.

Not a perfect episode but I enjoyed this one. It only made me cringe a couple times.

Basic Rocket Science

The study group accidentally gets locked in Greendale Community College's new space simulator. Dean Pelton wanted them to clean but they couldn't resist taking a look inside. Abed gets left behind as the space simulator gets towed. The others turn on themselves for a while until they realize that what they need to do is work together if they want to get the simulator back to campus.

Not bad, but also not so great. Dean Pelton had some of the best lines but there weren't that many of them. It felt like the episode rested a little too heavily on the shoulders of the simulator. There just wasn't enough in the way of meaningful character moments.

The Psychology of Letting Go

Jeff gets obsessed with his health after he learns he has high cholesterol despite his healthy diet. Pierce is convinced that his recently deceased mother will return from death, which creeps out the others, especially Troy. Britta and Annie get competitive about raising money for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Chang has to stay away from Professor Duncan due to a restraining order.

Patton Oswalt makes a guest appearance as a nurse at the the Greendale Health Clinic.

Not the best, not the worst. It had its moments but on the whole fell a bit short in my opinion.

Accounting for Lawyers

Jeff runs into Alan, an old colleague, someone he used to work with before he got disbarred. They start hanging out together. Jeff misses some of the study group's meetings. Annie realizes that she knows Alan from her Narcotics Anonymous group. I don't recall if this is something that came up in the first season or not, I mean the fact that Annie attended NA meetings.

Annie recalls something that Alan said that leads her to believe that he's the one that got Jeff fired. The group does what they can to break the news to Jeff and obtain proof that Alan is the culprit.

Chang still wants in to the study group. He gets to join their team for the Greendale Pop and Lockathon but they withhold membership in the study group.

Drew Carey shows up as one of the lawyers but not the one who betrayed Jeff.

There were a few good laughs in this one but it didn't measure up to the previous episode.

Anthropology 101

Britta is still reeling from what happened in 1.25 (Pascal's Triangle Revisited). She is mortified at all the attention she is getting until she realizes what a celebrity she has become on campus. Annie has the hots for Jeff. Jeff is publicly shunned by most if not all women on campus until he comes up with a strategy for getting back at Britta. Troy is tweeting everything stupid his new roommate, Pierce, says. Abed gets very meta with his ideas for the group. The group is taking an anthropology class taught by Professor June Bauer (Betty White). Chang, formerly Professor Chang the Spanish teacher, wants to join the study group.

I forgot how good this show can be. They pulled out all the stops with this one. I loved how ridiculous Jeff's scheme to get back at Britta got. I am very impressed. If all the episodes this season are as good as this one then I will be very happy.

Pascal's Triangle Revisited

- It's the end of the school year and Greendale is having a a dance to celebrate those students that are moving on to 4-year universities: Transition Dance
- Troy wants to move in with Abed but Abed changes the subject each time that Troy brings it up; Pierce invites Troy to come live with him; Troy resists Pierce's offer until the end of the episode when he comes to understand that living with good friend (Abed) might not be a good idea because you can get too much of a good thing
- Britta gets nominated for Transition Queen; at first she resists the notion of participating in the competition but later changes her mind
- Professor Slater, Jeff's ex, returns and wants Jeff back; Britta isn't completely over Jeff; Britta and Slater get into it over Jeff; it all comes to a head with both women declaring their love for him; Jeff doesn't know what to do and leaves the dance
- Outside Jeff runs into Annie who wasn't at the dance because she left with Vaughn; they were going to move to Delaware; Annie changed her mind and came back; Jeff explains his dilemma to Annie which somehow leads to them making out
- Shirley is also in this episode although she doesn't have a lot to do; I think Dean Pelton might have had more lines than Shirley

- Season Finale
- great ending to the season; love how it leaves things open for the 2nd season
- on the whole I think the 1st season ended strong with 4 of the last 5 episodes being solidly good or better in my book
- loved the Jeff-Britta-Slater triangle; I laughed a number of times at the way it developed and the participants reactions to the circumstances they got themselves into
- there was a number of cameos by characters who had only appeared in an episode or two prior to this one
- I'm not always crazy about each episode but I like the continuity that the show has going and look forward to seeing how it evolves in the next season

English as a Second Language

- Better than the last episode, which was a lot of fun but also a bit of a gimmick; this one was much more solidly set in the reality of the show
- Annie doesn't want the group to break up; she learns that Senor Chang doesn't have the proper credentials to teach Spanish and rats him out; the dean brings in a real Spanish teacher to administer the final; it looks like the study group will be retaking the class next semester
- loved the group dynamics in this one
- the scene where Jeff reveals what Annie did and tells them not to look at her for fear that they will fall pray to her sad face and forgive her is priceless
- the subplot with Troy and the plumber did nothing for me; it felt like it was trying to reference something else, probably a movie, but I'm not sure what if anything it was calling back to
- possibly my favorite episode of the season, if not it is right up there very close to the top
- just one more to go in Season 1

Modern Warfare

- Jeff wakes up from a nap only to discover that the campus of Greendale Community College is in the midst of a paintball war; there is paint everywhere; the campus seems deserted but there are pockets of people who haven't been eliminated from the game yet
- at first the men and women of the study group are on separate teams but then they join forces to fight other groups like the rollerskating disco fanatics and the glee club
- Senor Chang even gets in on the action while the dean hides out in his office
- Britta and Jeff hookup in the midst of the paintball war but agree afterwards that it was a mistake that shall never be repeated again or mentioned to anyone else; although Abed senses that something has changed

- one of the best episodes yet
- too many nods to movies and tv shows for me to begin to name them or recognize them all
- episodes like this and Contemporary American Poultry give me hope for the subsequent seasons

The Art of Discourse

- after Jeff and Britta get dissed by a trio of high school students they start scheming how to get back at them
- Abed gets some help from Troy checking things off his bucket list
- Pierce insults Shirley and gets kicked out of the group
- ends with a food fight and an Animal Party like series of updates

- meh; I could have done without this one; it really didn't do anything for me; seems like it was aimed at a younger audience; much less intelligent episode than many of the other ones

Contemporary American Poultry

- Abed temporarily usurps Jeff and becomes leader of the study group as they infiltrate the school cafeteria and start an operation distributing chicken fingers (the only decent thing the cafeteria serves) to the masses in return for favors
- all the characters get their moments but Jeff and Abed are at the center of it all
- I loved the commitment to the joke; it felt like a parody of a gangster film and I really liked that
- possibly my favorite episode up to this point

The Science of Illusion

- a bit of an oddball title since the focus of this episode is April Fool's Day
- the group fools Pierce into thinking he is a wizard, or do they?
- Britta decides to play a prank on Senor Chang but instead ends up killing a frog and pushing a dead body out of a window and into the quad; Jeff gets accused of breaking into the lab and pushing the body out the window after Britta frames him for the crime
- Annie and Shirley sign up to be temporary campus security and end up getting into a fight over who is the bigger bad ass; Abed follows them around narrating, directing, and sometimes inserting himeslf into their adventures as campus police

- overall a pretty good episode

Beginner Pottery

- the groups splits with Abed and Annie following Jeff's lead and opting to take a pottery class; at first Jeff thinks it will be a breeze but then he meets another student in the class who is cooler than him and seems unnaturally gifted at pottery; Jeff becomes obsessed with finding out what the other student's deal is; the pottery teacher is played by Tony Hale (Buster on Arrested Development)
- the rest of the group (Pierce, Shirley, Troy, Britta) sign up for a yachting class which takes place on an actual yacht which is in the school's parking lot; the yaching teacher is played by Lee Majors (aka Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man)

- this one had some good laughs

Basic Genealogy

- it is family day at Greendale Community College
- Jeff's girlfriend (Professor Slater) dumps him; Amber (Pierce's adult step-daughter) is on campus for family day and the the two men get a bit competitive about getting her attention, all be it for different reasons
- Britta goes to some rather extreme lengths to accept and understand Troy's grandmother, despite Troy's numerous warnings to stay away from her
- Abed's father and sister (who arrives wearing a burka) and Shirley's young sons also visit the campus
- the A plot is the Jeff-Pierce-Amber story
- Annie is also in this episode but to a much lesser degree than possibly any of the other regular cast members
- Senor Chang's brother (who is a rabbi) also shows up for family day

- the pictionary scene probably got the biggest laugh from me
- on the whole a good but not great or awful episode
