Two Days and Two Nights
The Enterprise arrives at Risa. Several members of the crew (Captain Archer, Commander Tucker, Lieutenant Reed, Ensign Sato, and Ensign Mayweather) go down to the planet hoping for a little rest and relaxation. Their experiences vary but they all have very different experiences that they expected they would.
Trip and Malcolm go to a bar hoping to pick up some alien women. They meet a couple beautiful, female looking aliens. Everything goes great until they go foor a walk with the ladies. They wind up in the basement of the bar. The women shapeshift into male looking aliens who then rob them. When they don't find anything of value on them they knock them out, tie them up and take their clothes. Malcolm and trip spend the rest of their time in their underwear trying to escape from the basement.
T'Pol and Doctor Phlox remain aboard the Enterprise. Phlox opts to get some rest while a the captain is gone. Crewman Cutler administers a sedative that helps him to hibernate for 48 hours. That's the plan. Ensign Mayweather comes back early. He injured himself rock climbing. He was given something for the pain at a Risan hospital. He's having some sort of an allergic reaction to the medication. His airway is constricting. Crewman Cutler isn't sure how to handle the situation. After consulting with T'Pol she wakes Doctor Phlox.
Hoshi uses her time on Risa to try and learn some new languages. She is tired of relying on the technology on the ship to help her communicate with alien species. She first talks to an elderly Risan couple. They leave and Hoshi is approached by another alien. He is fascinated by her ability to learn languages quickly. They spend a lot of time together, including her final night on the planet.
Doctor Phlox isn't very helpful when he first wakes up. His reactions are nonsensical. He doesn't seem ready to deal with a medical emergency. Eventually he pulls himself together enough to diagnose the problem and what to administer to Travis in order to prevent him from dying. He quickly goes back to sleep after it is clear that Ensign Mayweather is no longer in danger. This part of the story is mostly dealt with in a comical manner.
Captain Archer plans to spend his time reading. His plans change when he meets Keyla, a beautiful woman. She is staying in a room close to his. They spend some time together talking and walking on the beach. He asks her about herself and she tells that she lost her family to the Suliban. He reveals that he knows of them and has even encountered them. Keyla has all sorts of questions for him about the Suliban. Captain Archer gets suspicious and secretly scans her and learns that she is Tandaran. He and Ensign Mayweather were captured by the Tandarans in 1.21 (Detained). He turns the tables on Keyla, tells her what he has been able to figure out about her, and starts asking her questions. She uses a sedative to knock him out and then disappears.
Everyone is quiet on the shuttle ride back to the Enterprise at the end of the episode.
This episode was directed by Michael Dorn who played Worf on Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. It is the only episode of Enterprise that he directed.
This is the third and final episode in which that Crewman Cutler appeared. She was also in 1.13 (Dear Doctor).
This is a pretty good episode for one that doesn't feel like is has a lot of weight to it. I watched it because of it is considered to be a Temporal Cold War episode even though it is only Captain Archer's part of the episode that relates in any way to that story. I think what I liked most about it is the mix or humorous moments and character expanding ones.
