Covert War
The FBI and CIA join forces and strike back at the Russians. They send one of their agents in Moscow to assassinate General Zhukov. Claudia delivers the news to Elizabeth who immediately wants to strike back at the Americans. Claudia orders her not to but Elizabeth has her own ideas. She targets Richard Patterson, a high level agent of the CIA who is responsible for planning missions. Philip is opposed to the idea but goes along with Elizabeth's plans. Elizabeth seduces and sedates Patterson. He catches on at the last minute and fights back but it is too late.
There is more marital strife for Stan and Sandra Beeman. She goes out on the town with Elizabeth and tries to have some fun. Elizabeth is all for it but Sandra's heart isn't really in it. She winds up going home and confronting Stan, once he gets home. She drinks while she is waiting for him. She demands to know where he has been. He tries to explain but she doesn't buy his excuses.
Philip gets a surprise when he shows up at Martha's apartment. Her parents are there. He stays for a meal but ducks out as soon as he can. Martha is afraid that it was too much but Philip insists that it wasn't.
Stan has a meeting with Nina who once again asks him who killed Vlad. He still claims to know nothing. He tries ending their intimate relationship but by the end of the scene it looks like she has won him back.
Elizabeth has three flashbacks to meetings with General Zhukov. The first is set in 1964 soon after she met Philip for the first time. The second is set in 1971, soon after she became pregnant for the second time. The third is set in 1976. I guess the purpose of these scenes was to establish her emotional tie to General Zhukov, and make it clear that he was more than just a boss. I didn't get enough from these scenes to buy that argument.
In the end Elizabeth does not kill Patterson. She lets him go. Something he says makes her realize what she really wants, to be back together with Philip. The next night she goes to see Philip at the motel. She brings beer. It is pretty clear that she wants him to move back in with her and their kids. He doesn't pick up on the clues. He is focused on moving out of the motel and into an apartment. She leaves once she realizes and understands where his mind is.
Elizabeth meets with Claudia in the final scene. She accuses Claudia of trying to trick her into killing Patterson. Claudia tries claiming that she had a relationship with Zhukov. Elizabeth sees right through that lie.
On the whole not a great episode but I've seen worse. I still want to finish off this season but I think after that I will move on and not return to this show. I say that despite the fact that I'm pretty sure that there will be many stops pulled out in the last two episodes to entice me to return for season 2.
