Un Village Français 3.08

Le choix
or The Choice

27 Oct 1941

The Germans are getting ready to execute 20 hotages, most of whom are communists. Daniel and Servier try negotiating with Kollwitz. They get him to agree to cut it down to 10 hotages if they pick the hostages to get executed.

Marchetti returns. He is brought in to run the French search for the shooters. He arrives when Hortense is getting ready to leave Muller's office. They exchange words briefly. Muller is amused by the circumstances.

Cremieux sends Raymond across into Vichy once again with Marie. Cremieux seems to know about Raymond's fondness for Marie. The two lovers get to spend some time together. On the way back Raymond discovers that part of what Cremieux has them transporting is illegal blueprints.

Marcel remains in hiding and has yet to be found. One of the other communists, sent by Yvon, comes to see him. Marcel is told that he will have to get out of the area. They will send for him soon.

Judith goes to see Dr. Larcher. Her condition has gotten worse. He reassures her that she's going to be okay but he tells DeKervern the truth. She needs an operation that they can't afford and there isn't anyone nearby who can perform the operation.

DeKervern gets back to the police station and finds out that Marchetti has returned and been put in charge by Servier. Marchetti talks down to DeKervern in front of the other police officers and then puts him in charge of the investigation into the death of Caberni.

Daniel is not able to save everyone he wanted to save. Servier manages to save his nephew who is temporarily put on the list. The German high command insists on taking Emelie Estabet back to Germany for execution.

The French police get wise to the communists. They have Yvon's description and they spot him just as the episode ends.

Thoughts

Jeanine Schwartz, Lucienne, and Beriot are not in this episode.

Hortense really is a piece of work. She really doesn't care about anyone other than herself. I'm already starting to wonder about her fate even though there are still a few dozen episodes left in this show.

I thought for a moment during this episode that Marie was going to tell Raymond that she killed her husband. I think that at some point one or the other is going to reveal what they did.

I can only imagine how tough it must be to be put in the position of having to choose people to execute. Kollwitz didn't want to do it and he wasn't even from the town. Daniel and Servier had it even worse. The back and forth over who to put on the list versus who to keep off the list was very well played by the actors involved. It did not seem overly done or melodramatic.

I don't understand how it is that Marcel hasn't been found. If no one else then the owner of the house should have found him by now.

That was a very good episode but it wasn't easy to watch. I felt very emotional throughout.
