Broadchurch 1.04

Episode 4

It turns out that the burned boat does not to belong to Mark. Once the wreckage of the boat is brought ashore there is evidence found to indicate that Danny had once been on the boat.

Beth struggles with telling Mark that she knows about Becca Fisher. Eventually she does, but not until just before the end of the episode.

Oliver finds proof that Jack Marshall, who owns the news stand, had a conviction for a child sex crime. Oliver's boss takes the information to the police, who confront Marshall about it. Oliver later confronts Jack himself. Nige overhears the conversation between Oliver and Jack and tells Mark about it.

Karen White talks the Latimers into an interview for her newspaper. The article she writes gets national attention and more press arrive in town the next day.

Steven Connolly pesters Beth again. He claims that he told Alec about a boat. Alec discovers that Connolly has a police record and kicks him out of the Latimer house and tells him not to return.

Alec has dinner with Ellie and her husband. Alec returns back to the place where he is staying after dinner, passes out and hits his head. He wakes up in the hospital.

The editor of the local newspaper, Oliver's boss, gets a warning from the cleaning lady to stop asking questions. The editor was poking around after she found a picture in which the cleaning lady was identified by a different name than the one she currently uses.

The additional out of town press show up just as the Latimers are sitting down to Sunday dinner with friends, including Ellie. Jack Marshall also comes over to give them something he found, Danny's phone.

Thoughts

This was okay for this show. I find the show to be very surface level. It doesn't run very deep. I'm really hoping that Connolly is just delusional. If there turns out to be anything to his claims other than coincidence then I am going to be be very disappointed.

I'm seriously thinking about giving up on Broadchurch even though I've only watched half of the first season. The show is just way too melodramatic for me. I think I might like it more if it was more focused or some of the characters and less on the drama that surrounds the investigation.
