Broadchurch 1.06

Episode Six

The episode opens with the funeral for Jack Marshall. Alec and Ellie keep their eyes open at the funeral and at the reception afterwards. Alec approaches Tommy, Ellie's son, and talks to him for a few minutes until Tommy's father sees them talking and gets Danny away from Alec.

Karen White tries to apologize to Ollie. She ran off for a few days after Jack Marshall was found dead. She feared that she would be blamed. Ollie isn't too impressed by her disappearing routine or by the fact that she didn't respond to his texts or e-mails.

Alec does some research and discovers that Paul Coates, the priest, is a recovering alcoholic. Alec suspects that Paul is hiding more than just that and asks him to come in so that he can get a genetic sample.

Beth meets with a woman who's daughter was killed a few years ago. Beth hopes that it will help but the woman doesn't have any good advice for her. She just tells her about how she drinks a lot now and is unable to work.

Chloe tries returning to school but she can't stand it there so she leaves and goes to see her boyfriend. Her parents get worried when they can't seem to reach her and she isn't at school or home. They find her at her boyfriend's farm. It is all very innocent but they take her away to an arcade and spend the afternoon hanging out there, having fun.

Susan Wright runs into Tom Miller on the beach. She gives him Danny's skateboard. He takes it home and tells his parents about it.

Maggie Radcliffe, the editor of the local newspaper, does some digging and finds something out about Susan Wright's past. She calls Susan and gets her to come in to the newspaper's offices. Maggie also calls Alec and Ellie. They are there when Susan arrives and take her in for questioning

Susan won't speak. She wants to know what happened to her dog. Nige came along and took her dog while she was in the offices of the newspaper. No one seemed to notice.

The episode ends with Alec and Ellie going down to the cottage by the cliff. Someone has reported a break-in. They try to catch the person who broke in but he gets away.

Thoughts

Who called to let Ellie know that someone had broken into the cottage by the cliff? What is up with Alec? Why does he keep collapsing? What was up with the dream sequence that Alec had at the beginning of the episode? Why did Susan give Tom the skateboard? Why did Nige take Susan's dog? Did he kill it with the crossbow? Was it Nige who broke into the cottage?

This show is kind of wacky. There are some weird jumps made from one moment to the next. I've stopped trying to make sense of it all. I'm going to watch the last two episodes in this season and then later I will decide if I want to watch more.
