Luke Cage 2.11

The Creator

A decent episode. Things continue to build toward the inevitable end which I am fairly certain will include a showdown between Mariah and McIver. The events of this episode are mostly followup on what happened at the end of last episode, the massacre at Gwen's.

Luke and Misty are at Gwen's in the opening scene. They are giving it a once over before the crime scene unit arrives. They are both fairly sure that Mariah is behind it all. Misty follows a hunch which turns out to be correct. She learns that the gun that shot Anansi is the same one that was used on Candace in 1.13 (You Know My Steez). Misty learns later that another murder can be tied to that gun, Peter Stokes aka Uncle Pete.

Luke and Misty also learn that someone survived the massacre, Ingrid, Anansi's wife. Luke tracks her down and finds her just before Mariah's men get to her. Shades has the opportunity to kill Ingrid but he can't get himself to pull the trigger. Later he goes to see Mariah. He gives her a hard time about the massacre. It goes against the code of the streets, as he puts it. She says he is weak.

Mariah was starting to cozy up to Alex, her personal assistant, before Shades showed up. She accuses Shades of having a homosexual relationship with Comanche when they were in Seagate Prison together. She talks about wishing that she could have been the one to kill him. Her words push Shades a little too far and he grabs her and starts to choke her but doesn't kill her. He walks out declaring that she isn't worth the effort.

Matilda heals Bushmaster. A series of flashbacks reveal his backstory, how far back his relationship with the Stokes family goes, and how they almost killed him when he was young. Peter Stokes shot him when he was still living in Jamaica. Anansi got him to a healer who saved him by using nightshade. The flashbacks are told from McIver's perspective as Matilda works on him.

McIver visits Gwen's after he is well enough to move. He is accompanied by Sheldon and Matilda. Sheldon seems to want to do away with Matilda but McIver decides to let her go.

Mariah hallucinates while she is alone in her office. She thinks that Mama Mabel and Uncle Pete are in her office. She gets incensed. They question her judgement. Uncle Pete makes reference to Matilda, his daughter, and makes claims that make me wonder if she is going to turn by the end of the season.

Luke brings Ingrid to see Anansi's body. She doesn't want to talk to the police. She doesn't seem at injured as she should be. There's a moment where she tears off a band-aid and there is no damage underneath. I  maybe reading the signs wrong but I think she may possess some of the same strength that her nephew John McIver does.

Shades goes to see Misty. He tells her that he wants to help her take down Mariah. He lets her puts handcuffs on him. This is an interesting turn. I wasn't sure what was going to happen after he walked out on Mariah after choking her. I didn't expect him to approach Misty but I do see possibilities here.

Bushmaster shows up at the morgue. He has a talk with Luke who tells him to leave town. The episode ends with Sugar approaching Luke and telling him he wants to help.

This episode is light on action but heavy on setup for the final two episodes of the season. It's a shame that this show has been canceled because I'm pretty sure that I would have wanted to watch the next season if there was one, even now, with two episodes to go in this one.
