If It Ain't Rough, It Ain't Right
Things pick up right where they left off at the end of the last episode. The viewers know everything but it quickly becomes clear that not all of the characters on the show do.
Hernan aka Shades burns the gloves he wore when he shot his friend, the traitor, Darius aka Comanche. He tells Darius' mother the story he concocted in the last episode. She doesn't buy it. She wants to believe that her son was stronger than that. He wouldn't bend to the pressure put on him by the cops. Shades doesn't tell her what she wants to hear but he does promise to make sure she is taken care of.
Mariah and Tilda are taken to the police station, which sometimes seems like the only police station in a city that must have over a hundred of them. Luke turns down her offer. He doesn't know at this point that Mariah is penniless. It doesn't matter. He does promise to look after Tilda and later gets some information from her about Bushmaster's visit to her shop.
Misty is put in charge of the homicide investigation of Captain Riddenhour's murder. She quit but the captain never put in the paper work so she is still the ranking detective. Luke sees the pictures of the double murder of Riddenhour and Comanche. He recognizes Comanche as one of Shades' men. Misty tries to use this information to pry some information out of Mariah. The councilwoman is disturbed by the murder of Riddenhour but she still refuses to talk to Misty about what it is going on.
Ben Donovan, Mariah's lawyer, shows up with Shades. They are there to get Mariah and Tilda. Misty agrees to let Mariah go but insists on holding on to Shades. He is a "person of interest" in the murder of Captain Riddenhour. Misty uses her sixth sense to recreate the crime. Donovan and Hernan aren't buying it but Donovan walks out on Shades, leaving him to fend for himself, after he gets a phone call. Presumably it was a call informing him of Mariah's financial situation.
Mariah's people, led by Sugar, come to get her. She was going to wait for Shades but now that Donovan has deserted them she panics and leaves without her lover. A Jamaican hit squad attempts to kill Mariah as she is leaving the precinct. She survives thanks to Luke. One of the gun men tells them about the bounty that has been put on Mariah's head and on Luke's head. Misty uses that information to get a search warrant for Harlem's Paradise.
Misty has to let Shades go eventually. She doesn't have any evidence to link him to the murder. Shades meets up with Mariah at her burned out brownstone. Things get a little heated between them. Shades lets Mariah burn off some steam and then gives her a pep talk. He talks about hitting Bushmaster where it will hurt him the most.
Misty doesn't get much from the search of Harlem's Paradise. Bushmaster lets them know about his family's connection to Mariah's family. Misty also gets to see that Ben Donovan has switched sides and is now working for the Stylers.
Bushmaster has problems of his own. He argues with his uncle about Nightshade, the vital ingredient in the mixture that makes him fast, strong, and bulletproof. His uncle warns him about using it too much because it is like a steroid. He also tells his nephew that they cannot synthesize is and that it needs to be grown in Jamaica soil. The argument ends with the uncle storming off. Shades spots him as he leaves the club and begins to follow him.
A second Jamaican hit squad attacks James Lucas' church. Luke is there to keep them from murdering his father and innocent bystanders. Luke meets up with Misty at Tilda's shop where they find Mariah and Tilda. Just after they arrive a third Jamaican squad attacks. Misty and Luke fight off the would-be assassins. Unsure where to turn next, Luke advises Misty to call Danny and tell them that they need a favor.
This was another decent episode. Things are moving very fast. I'm enjoying the way the story is progressing. I like how the heroes are caught in the middle, between the two rival factions. I also like the evolution of Mariah and Hernan's relationship. The beats aren't as subtle as I would prefer them to be but I'm enjoying them. Even if they don't stick the landing it has been a fun ride up to this point.
