Among the Living (1941)

Starring Albert Dekker, Susan Hayward, Harry Carey, Frances Farmer
Directed by Stuart Heisler

John Raden (Dekker) returns to the town where he grew up, for his father's funeral. It is then that he discovers that his twin brother, whom he thought was dead, is still alive. Paul is alive and a bit crazy. He murders the servant who has been taking care of him and then wanders into town. Paul becomes a fugitive after he murders a woman. A mob goes looking for Paul after John posts a reward for his brother's capture, dead or alive. The mob mistakes John for Paul and almost lynches him.

This is not a long or a great movie but it was fun to watch. It feels more Southern Gothic than film noir. I thought the acting was good even if it was a bit over the top at times. I would have preferred a darker ending than the one the movie provides.

I saw this as part of a double feature at the Noir City DC film festival at the AFI Silver. It was introduced by Eddie Muller of the Film Noir Foundation.
