Persepolis (2007)

Persepolis (2007)

starring Chiara Mastroianni, Catherine Deneuve
written and directed by Marjane Satrapi, Vincent Paronnaud

This is the story of Marjane Satrapi. She was living with her parents in Tehran when the Iranian Revolution began. She was very excited by it. She was very young at the time. She continued to live in Tehran with her parents. She was always outspoken. It got her into trouble.

Her parents sent her to Austria to study when she was a teenager. She had studied French in Iran at a French school so they sent her to a similar school in Vienna. Life in Vienna wasn't easy, for multiple reasons. She returned to Iran after burning more than one bridge in Vienna.

She was happy to be back with her parents and her grandmother. The war with Iraq was over but life in Iran was still very oppressive.

Thoughts

This is an animated movie, as implied by the poster.

This movie was made in France and the speaking parts were originally recorded in French. There is a version of the movie where the parts are played by different actors but voiced in English. The actress who plays the adult Marjane voiced the role in both the French and English language versions of the the film. I watched the French version.

This movie is based on the books written and drawn by Marjane Satrapi. I read the books 15 or so years ago. I like the books and the movie but there is something about Marjane Satrapi that rubs me the wrong way. I don't hate her but the story of her life seems to focus on the times when she acts out and speaks up. It is hard to tell if her early life was really that filled with moments like that or if those are just the ones that stand out in her mind. I guess what I am trying to say is that her story feels unbalanced. The pacing or the structure seem off.

I really like the look the movie. Most of it is in black and white with shades of gray. There is a framing sequence that has some color in it but even that doesn't have a lot of color.
