The Orville 1.12

Mad Idolatry

The Orville finds a planet that appears out of nowehere. Commander Grayson leads a team down to the planet's surface. She has a look around, by herself, and accidentally leaves an impression on the planet. The away team returns to the Orville. The planet disappears. It reappears 11 days later but hundreds of years have passed on the planet's surface and the people there remember Kelly as a god-like being.

Ed and Kelly, before they discover what her interference has created, try rekindling their relationship. They have a few drinks together the night before the planet appears for the first time. They have a date before the planet reappears, for the first time. Everything seem to be going great but Kelly has trouble dealing with what people on the planet's surface are doing in her name. That ultimately leads her to reconsider giving her romantic relationship with Ed another try.

Thoughts

I appreciate what they are trying to do here but I do not love this episode, although it is better than the previous one. I thought Kelly's reaction to what she did was about as professional as Ed's reaction to her reveal (in the previous episode). The ending made it seem like it didn't really matter what Kelly did and that things would correct themselves eventually. I'm not sure what kind of message they are trying to send here.

I do like where they leave things between Ed and Kelly. Ending the season with them back together again would have been a big mistake unless of course it was just temporary and they reversed it early in the next season.

I like this season but I'm not crazy about it. I am curious to see what else they do with this show in the next season. I will probably return for more but not right away.
