The Orville 2.05

All the World is Birthday Cake

The Orville is contacted by the people of Regor 2, a planet that has never been visited by aliens before. Captain Mercer leads a team of five to the planet's surface. Everything goes beautifully until Kelly mentions that her birthday is just a few days away and that Bortus' birthday is a few days after that.

Kelly and Bortus are thrown in a prison camp with other people, all of whom were born under the sign of Giliac. Ed tries to negotiate for their release but the leader of Regor 2 refuses to budge on the matter.

A month goes by without much in the way of change. Captain Mercer receives orders from the Planetary Union to leave Regor 2 and leave the negotiating up to the Planetary Union. All seems lost until Talla, the new security chief, suggests that they take a closer look at the constellation of stars that is associated with Giliac.

Thoughts

Ted Danson played the admiral who ordered Captain Mercer to depart Regor 2. I know him best for playing Sam Malone on Cheers but I've seen him in plenty of other things.

The people of Regor 2 looked very human. They had some marks on their faces but that was about it in terms of physical characteristics that would distinguish them from humans. There was no explanation as to whether everyone spoke English or if there was some translation devices at work.

This was a fun episode but there was a little too much hand waving in it for me. I didn't feel moved by it.
