My Funny Valentine
Something jogs Faye's memory and she flashes back to before she met the crew of the Bebop. She remembers how little she remembers and why. She remembers Whitney Hagas Matsumoto, a man with whom she fell in love and who broke her heart. He's dead now, or so she thinks until he shows up very much alive and with a bounty on his head.
Faye was put into cryogenic sleep when she was about 20. She stayed that was for 54 years. Records were lost. The doctor who wakes her up has no idea who she is but tells her that she has amassed a huge amount of debt over the past 54 years. Whitney presents himself as her lawyer and promises to help her. He appears to get killed while running from the police. At this point Faye was not yet the tough, embittered person she later becomes and has been through the course of the series. She trusted Whitney. She was in love with him.
In the present, Whitney gets picked up by Jet. He is wanted for marital fraud. It has only been three years since Faye last saw him but he has put on a lot of weight. Jet and Spike are ready to turn him in for the reward. Faye is angry at him but decides that she can't turn him in. She tries to make a run for it with him in her little spaceship. Spike comes after her. The police show up. She turns him in for the reward on his head. She doesn't learn anything more about her past than what she already knew.
I like these episode that explore the main characters' pasts. It expands the show and makes it feel deeper than it otherwise would. I enjoyed the mix of humor and personal drama in this one. If I remember correctly there is one more episode that explores Faye's past but I'm not sure how soon it is coming up.
