This episode is filled with lots of little moments. They are all centered around the fact that the Yamato is getting read to leave the solar system. Commander Okita, in recognition of the important step, decides to have a ceremony. Crew members are given the opportunity to call home. Several conversations with loved ones back on Earth are shown but there is no central character in this episode.
Kodai doesn't have anyone to talk to back on Earth. He volunteers to take the place of someone on the repair crew. He is joined by Yamamoto. The two get to know one another a little better as they help to fix the exterior of the ship.
Yamamoto, like Kodai, doesn't have anyone left. Her grandparents moved to Mars. She was born there but the family had to move back to Earth once war broke out. Captain Kato wouldn't let her join the squadron initially. He was friends with her brother who was killed in combat with the Gamilas and didn't want to see her suffer the same fate.
Kodai also gets a couple moments alone with Yuki. She explains that she doesn't remember anything prior to a year ago.
Commander Okita gets a visit from Hikozaemon Tokugawa, the chief engineer. This isn't the first time the two men served together. They reminisce as they drink wine.
Kaoru Niimi has a secret. Someone back on Earth is counting on her and says that she is Earth's last hope. I have no idea who that someone was or why he thinks she is Earth's last hope.
The Gamilas do not appear in this episode.
Thoughts
I was very impressed with the way this episode was arranged and assembled. There's plenty of little bits sprinkled throughout that help to flesh out a number of the characters.
