Young Justice 2.01

Happy New Year

Five years have passed since the end of season 1. Robin (Dick Grayson) is now Nightwing and there's a new Robin (Tim Drake). Miss Martian and Lagoon Boy are dating. Superboy doesn't seem to be too happy about it.

Batgirl and Wonder Girl try to defend UN Secretary General Seng from Lobo who has been sent to Earth to kill him. Lobo proves to be a little too much for them. They get a surprise when Lobo goes in for the kill: the Secretary is actually an alien, a Crolotean. Lobo doesn't kill him. Instead he flies off with him while Batgirl and Wonder Girl watch, unsure what to make of what they just saw.

Adam Strange, of STAR Labs, is brought to the Watchtower. He tells a mixed group of Justice League and Young Justice about how he traveled to Rann and what he learned there. It looks like it ties back to the alien that was impersonating UN Secretary General Seng. Captain Atom, who appears to be the current leader of the Justice League, wants to send a team to Rann to learn more but there's a problem. The Justice League are not welcome on Rann and six of them (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Martian Manhunter) are wanted criminals on Rann.

Nightwing and Batman surmise that it has something to do with the missing 16 hours. When Vandal Savage took over the league he sent the same six leaguers on a mission. They didn't know where until now. They still don't understand why Vandal Savage sent them to Rann but it seems likely that they stole something and brought it back to Earth. Nightwing volunteers to send a team from Young Justice, since they are not viewed on Rann with the same contempt as the Justice League.

Young Justice uses some tech that Sardath, Rann's chief scientist, gave to Adam Strange. It helps them pinpoint the location of Zeta technology. Wonder Girl and Nightwing head to Philadelphia. Batgirl, Bumblebee, and Wolf head to Vladivostock. Robin, Blue Beetle, and Lagoon Boy head to New Orleans.

Robin's team finds a Crolotean hideout. They sneak in and contact YJ HQ. They are told to lay low and that reinforcements are on the way. That proves to be difficult as they are spotted by the aliens seconds later. The Croloteans seem more than ready for a fight until they see Blue Beetle in action. They quickly retreat and set the base to destruct. Blue Beetle discovers that he can understand what the Croloteans are saying and that there are prisoners on a lower level. The three heroes locate and rescue the human prisoners (which includes the real Secretary General Seng) before the base self destructs.

The episode ends with Miss Martian, Superboy, Beast Boy, and Adam Strange arriving on Rann.

Other stuff:
  • G. Gordon Godfrey does what he can to sow distrust of the Justice League
  • The Justice League logo from the old show is shown briefly in the background
  • Who is Catherine Cobert? She seems to be a civilian spokesperson for the League but I am unfamiliar with this character.
  • Superboy, Miss Martian, Robin, Bumble Bee, Beast Boy, and Blue Beetle fight Clayface in the sewer
Thoughts

This is an excellent start. I like how they are both jumping ahead and yet also tying this story into the final story from the end of the first season. A number of the characters get little moments. The team of Robin, Lagoon Boy, and Blue Beetle probably more spotlight than anyone else. Batgirl and Wonder Girl also get a chance to shine.

They have expanded the cast quite a bit. Hopefully there will be episodes that involve fewer characters and that are more focused than this one.

Despite having watched the first season three times this is my first time watching the second season. There are lots of new characters in this episode without much in the way of introduction. I had to watch this one twice to pick up on everything that was going on.
