Hordak wants Catra to get rid of Shadow Weaver. Catra objects which angers Hordak. He's got a new bestie, Entrapta. He gives Catra two days to get information out of Shadow Weaver, after which she needs to send her to Beast Island.
Catra does her best but Shadow Weaver won't talk. Shadow Weaver does a lot of thinking about her past, when she was known as Light Spinner. She had a pupil named Micah, who was very eager to learn more and help her. She wasn't with the Horde then. She had a plan to defeat the Horde, who had just captured the Black Garnet, but the other sorcerers objected.
Light Spinner went ahead with her plan, with Micah's assistance. She summoned dark forces when the three moons aligned. She became very powerful and killed some of the other sorcerers but she let Micah go.
Shadow Weaver can tell that something is on Catra's mind. She talks her former protege into revealing what she's thinking about. Catra wants to know why Shadow Weaver always gave her such a hard time. Shadow Weaver's response surprises Catra. She sees herself in Catra. She then asks Catra to bring her old badge.
Catra does as Shadow Weaver asks but then they get into an argument and Catra leaves. Shadow Weaver finds the badge under the tray of food that Catra brought her. She uses it to escape. Catra returns to find just an illusion of Shadow Weaver occupying the cell.
There is one final scene away from the Fright Zone. Bow is trying to get better reception for his tablet. When he finally does, with some help from Adora and Glimmer, he finds a message that reads "Serenia Portal Mara".
Thoughts
The parts that dealt with Shadow Weaver's past did nothing for me. It was interesting to see who she was before but it felt like there were no stakes. That part took up half the episode but they could have trimmed it down to a two-minute flashback and I think I would have felt just as satisfied.
Micah is Glimmer's father. The flashbacks take place when he was just a boy which must have been about 30 years before the present. All that they needed to say is that Light Spinner later becomes Shadow Weaver and she once taught Glimmer's father. That's the extent of what I gleamed from the flashbacks.
The parts that took place in the present I liked, even though it was pretty clear that Shadow Weaver was playing Catra. How desperate is Catra for Shadow Weaver's approval? The ironic thing is that she keeps pushing Scorpia, who adores her, away but she gets drawn in by Shadow Weaver's lies.
This wasn't a great episode but it certainly moved the story forward.
