She's Gotta Have It 1.06

#HeGotItAllMixedUp (DYSLEXIA)

Nola's art show finally happens. She gets Mars to help her get her work to the space where the show happens. She asks him to stay outside but when he gets there he goes in anyway. He gets into an argument with Clorinda, whom he once dated. Nola gets there in time to separate Mars and Clorinda. Mars is hurt and he doesn't understand why Nola doesn't want him there.

Nola calls Shemekka only to find out that she is having her debut at the club the same night as the art show. Neither of them can accept the other's situation. They both feel hurt and blame the other. The conversation doesn't end on a friendly note.

The show happens. Nola is one of four artists whose work makes up the show. Nola is very nervous. She knows some of the people there. She doesn't know what to make of those that she is meeting for the first time. All three of her men show up, even though she didn't invite them. Her parents are there. Opal is there with Skylar, her daughter.

Mars meets Dean Haggin, one of the weird artists, in the bathroom before he goes looking for Nola. Mars is convinced that Haggin is the one that defaced Nola's street art. Jamie brings Nola flowers which she gives to Skylar. He's a bit offended that she didn't invite him. Greer is also at the show but doesn't say anything or even approach Nola.

Shemekka's debut at the club goes very well until it doesn't. She got some more injections in her butt before going to the club. Everything is going great until she trips and falls backwards on her ass. Her skin tears and fluid goes flying. Nola gets a call from Shemekka's mother who is with her in the hospital. Nola goes to the hospital to see her but Shemekka is unconscious. She has a blood infection, according to her mother.

Thoughts

Tracy Camilla Johns who played Nola Darling in She's Gotta Have It (1986) shows up at the art show. She gets a brief chance to talk to Nola. I couldn't figure out who she was until I checked IMDB but I thought she looked familiar.

Wallace Shawn who is probably best known from his role in The Princess Bride plays one of the patrons of the art museum. I think there may have been some other B or C level celebrities that I did not recognize. When he first showed up on screen he was shown from behind. I thought it looked like him but then I was astonished to discover that it was the exact actor who I thought it might be.

Shemekka's debut at the club was going so well that I knew something was going to go wrong but I didn't know exactly what. I wasn't sure what to feel when it did. It wasn't funny. It was supposed to be shocking or sad, I think, but I just had a hard time feeling anything.

On the whole this was an interesting episode.
