Over the Black Light
Shinohara volunteers to fly a captured Gamilan fighter through the gate to Balun on a recon mission. He winds up in the middle of a huge fleet of Gamilan ships. He looks around and takes stock of the situation. Shinohara escapes through the gate and makes his way back to the Yamato.
Commander Okita does what everyone expects least and decides that they need to fly through the gate to Balun. The Yamato arrives and charges through the Gamilan fleet taking out as many ships as it can. It flies into the core of Balun.
Admiral Zoelick has assumed control of the Gamilan forces now that Desler is dead. He appeals to the troops serving with him to follow him. He orders all ships to converge on the Yamato. He doesn't care if ships are lost due to friendly fire. Zoelick is stunned to learn, in the midst of the battle with the Yamato, that Desler is not dead, even though his ship was destroyed. General Goer wastes no time and kills Zoelick.
The Yamato bursts through the Gamilan fleet and into the heart of Balun. It emerges minutes later and heads straight for the gate to the Large Magellanic Cloud. The Yamato opens fire on Balun with the Wave Motion Gun just before it disappears through the gate.
Thoughts
There's a little too much going on here. There was potentially two to three episodes worth of material in this one.
I don't understand how the Yamato went unscathed for as long as it did.
The animation is beautiful but this show doesn't always make sense to me. The leaps it requires me to make are at times, like in this episode, a little too much.
