Nola starts a cleanse which includes cleansing herself of men. She starts up a relationship with a Opal Gilstrap, a friend with whom she almost had a relationship a couple years earlier. Opal is drawn to Nola but she isn't a free spirit like Nola.
Nola starts a new job, teaching art. The night before her first day on the job she goes out with Terrell, a guy friend. It's his parents anniversary and she is his date. Terrell is gay and has yet to come out to his parents. Nola gets home late and can't find her keys. She winds up staying at Opal's place for the night.
Nola sticks around the next morning and helps Skylar, Opal's daughter, make oatmeal. She runs into Greer while she is having coffee with Opal. She shows up for the teaching job wearing the same clothes she wore the night before. She still hasn't been able to get back into her apartment and has no lesson plan so she improvises.
Nola finally retrieves her spare key from her parents apartment. Her landlord gives her a warning when she sees Nola. She wants the current month's rent. It is over two weeks past due. Nola spends the rest of the day painting. She returns to Opal's place with a painting for Skylar. It is late. She was supposed to be there a couple hours earlier. Sklar is already in bed.
Opal is disappointed. She tells Nola that she's okay being friends but that's about it.
Thoughts
Opal is a character who was also in the movie. Mars and Jamie are not in this episode. Clo has a very brief appearance. Shemekka has a slightly longer appearance but it is also a brief one and, unlike Clo, her appearance has nothing to do with Nola's arc in this story.
I can see some sort of an arc starting to take shape. I think it has been there all along but I am just starting to see the shape of it. Everything was great in Nola's world but it has changed and she is being pushed to change. Will she? Does she want to?
