Watchmen (2019) 1.02

Martial Feats of Comanche Horsemanship

Angela leaves the body but takes the old man in the wheelchair back to her bakery. He claims that is was he who hung the chief's body from the tree.

Angela has a flashback to the White Night, the night that most of the police officers in Tulsa were murdered, including Doyle. The children she now takes care of were Doyle's children.

Chief Crawford's body is found the next morning by the police. They suspect that the Seventh Kavalry is responsible for the murder. Red Menace leads the Tulsa police force in an act of retribution as they tear apart a camp of homeless White people. Angela is present but chooses not to participate until one of the homeless men attacks her.

Angela tells Topher, the eldest of Doyle's kids, about the murder of Chief Crawford. She lets him watch TV. He watches a program about Hooded Justice.

Angela goes to see Chief Crawford's wife. Angela fakes a fainting spell and then sneaks around the Crawford house. She finds the robe of a Klansman hidden in the chief's closet.

Adrian Veidt has his servants perform a play for him which recreates the events which led to the transformation of John Osterman into Doctor Manhattan. One of his servants is killed in the course of the play.

Angela gets a genetic sample from Will. She takes it to the Greenville Cultural Center and has it tested. The results from the test reveal his identity and that he is Angela's grandfather. He won't tell her what she wants to know so she loads him in her car, with the stated intention of arresting him. Something comes out of the sky and takes her car with Will in it before she care climb inside.

Thoughts

The episode opens with a sequence during World War I. Will's father gets a piece of German propaganda in the form of a leaflet that is dropped from an airplane. It is on that leaflet that he writes "Watch Over This Boy" in 1921. The leaflet falls out of the sky into Angela's hands after her car and Will disappear at the end of the episode.

Don Johnson is in this episode in Angela's flashback sequence.

Hooded Justice is White in the TV show that Topher watches.

There is a White man who shows up on Angela's porch looking to spend some time with Doyle's children. I don't think it is explicitly clear but the situation seems to imply that he is their grandfather.

I like this episode better than the previous one. It seems more focused. It gives me more hope for this series, hope that I will like it was worth my time and money.
