Crash Landing on You 1.02

Episode 2

Yoon Se-ri finds out that she has unknowingly taken refuge Ri Jeong-hyuk's home. He allows her to stay. She wants to return to South Korea but there is no easy way to get her there. Kim Joo-meok, one of Jeong-hyuk's men who likes to watch South Korean television shows, knows someone who might be able to help smuggle her out of the country but not for a few days. For the present she will have to stay put and out of sight.

Jeong-hyuk wants to investigate the fatal car crash that happened in the previous episode. Jo Cheol-gang, his commanding officer, lets him go through with it but he sets a trap for Jeong-hyuk. A friend of Cheol-gang interrogates Jeong-hyuk when he gets to Pyongyang. The interrogation doesn't get very far because Jeong-hyuk is saved by someone higher up the chain of command who sees what's happening and intervenes. This other person reveals, in the process, that Jeong-hyuk's father is a very high ranking figure in the government.

Jeong-hyuk rushes back home when he learns by phone from Pyo Chi-soo, one of his men, that Cheol-gang has ordered house to house searches. He gets back just after Se-ri is found hiding in his kim chi cellar. Jeong-Hyuk explains that she is his fiancée.

At the very end of the episode it is revealed that Se-ri, sometime before the series began, was depressed and wanted to end her life. She was talked out of doing that and was talked into going to see the mountains in Switzerland.

Thoughts

Jeong-hyuk seems to think that the crash in the first episode is somehow related to his older brother's death, years before.

I'm not sure what to make of the final sequence in the episode. Did Se-ri and Jeong-hyuk meet before? It isn't clear. My guess is no, but they were standing near one another while they watched para-gliders sailing high above them.

There's another sub-plot that I have not mentioned. It has yet to intersect with Se-ri and Jeong-hyuk's story. South Korean Goo Seung-joon is taking refuge in North Korea to evade the police. I'm not sure how or when he will cross paths with Se-ri and Jeong-hyuk but I'm guessing that will happen eventually.

I'm still liking this well enough. I'm sure that there are some things I am missing but I am able to follow most of it, thanks to the subtitles. One of the trickier parts for me is getting used to all the names. I may come back for more but it probably won't be for at least a few weeks.
