Back to Space

Hazanko tries to seize the power of the Galactic Leyline but Gene shows up. He shoots Hazanko with a caster shell. It seems to kill Hazanko but it also knocks Gene off his feet. Gwen Khan shows up while Gene is writhing on the ground. Gene recovers. Gwen Khan tries to talk to Gene about splitting the power of the Galactic Leyline.

Hazanko returns before the conversation gets very far. Gene shoots him again, this time with his last caster shell. Everything fades to black. Gene wakes up in another dimension. Melfina is there. She tells him that they are within the Galactic Leyline. Gwen Khan is there. He finally seems to have found what he seeks.

Maze of Despair

Melfina is a prisoner at the center of a maze. The others, friends and foes, seek to make their way through the maze. They each start from different places but eventually their paths start to intersect. Gene, Suzuka, and Aisha each encounter Kei pirates whom they must fight. Harry is the first one to get to the center of the maze but before he can free Melfina he is joined by Hazanko. Harry tries to kill the pirate but Hazanko kills him without much effort.

Hazanko makes Melfina open the gate and then enters. Gene, Gwen, and Ronald MacDougall converge on the spot where Harry's body is laying. Gene and Ronald fight. Gene kills him with the fourth caster shell. He only has two left. Gene goes into a dream state after Ronald is killed. Jim shows up and brings him out of it. Gene sends Jim back to the Outlaw Star while he forges ahead. He runs into Gwen Khan and then Harry returns from the dead but he is barely alive. He helps Gene and Gwen get through a locked door before dying one last time.

Cutting the Galactic Leyline

The crew of the Outlaw Star resupply and then head toward the Galactic Leyline. They find that someone has arrived there ahead of them, Kei Pirates led by Hazanko. The Kei pirates attack the Outlaw Star or XGP. Hazanko wants it and Melfina, and attacks with lots of small attack craft.

Two more ship arrive during the battle, a Ctarl-Ctarl cruiser and the MacDougal's ship. Harry has been rebuilt and the MacDougals are now working with Gwen Khan. The Ctarl-Ctarl ship attempts to penetrate the space surrounding the Galactic Leyline but it returns unsuccessful. The Outlaw Star, the MacDouglal Ship, and the Geomancer (Hazanko's ship) cross the barrier into the Galactic Leyline. Melfina is abducted by an unknown force once they get there.

Hot Springs Planet Tenrei

The crew of the Outlaw Star travel to Tenrei. Gene goes to look for shells for his caster gun while the others enjoy the hot springs. He climbs two mountains in search of the ammunition. He meets two wizards at the top of Mt. Nantai. They tell him about the origins of the caster shells.

The wizards promise to provide him with two of the three rarest of caster shells if he will travel to Mt. Nyotai, where men are not allowed, and take dirty pictures of Urt, the third wizard. It takes Gene several attempts to avoid the traps and make it to the top of Mt. Nyotai. He meets Urt and gets the dirty pictures and the third rare kind of caster shell.

Gravity Jailbreak

Gene is sent to Gehenna Prison on the planet Hecatoncheir. The planet has an unusual gravity profile. The gravity is 3G where the prison is located and 10G at the poles. There are no guards, just robots that are all controlled by the warden. Gene is there to get the coordinates to the Galactic Leyline from Saiyo Wong, another prisoner. 

Gene meets Wong while they are both being punished. Gene has a plan to get them out of there. The plan works and they get picked up by the Outlaw Star. Wong gives Gene a device which has the coordinates but Wong has no interest in going after it.

Grave of the Dragon

The Outlaw Star travels to a planet where the Way of the Dragon is found. Fred Luo gave them the coordinates. Aisha is convinced that it is where they will find the Galactic Leyline. The others aren't so sure. Melfina hopes that whatever they find it will shed some light on her past.

The MacDougall brothers follow the Outlaw Star to the planet. They plan their attack while the crew of the Outlaw Star is exploring ancient buildings they find on the planet. Harry approaches Melfina when she goes outside for some air. He tries to convince her to come with him but she declines his offer.

Gene finds Melfina with Harry and attacks. Ron MacDougall attacks the others with some help from robotic attack dogs. The fights get broken up by seismic activity. The crew of the Outlaw Star heads back to the ship and leave. Ron finds what is left of Harry, crushed.

Outlaw Star 1.20

Cats and Girls and Spaceships

The Outlaw Star is on its way to Symka 5 space station when it is attacked by another ship. Gene thinks he can take the other ship but he quickly discovers that the other ship is more powerful than he thought. He creates a diversion and then runs away in the end.

Gene and Jim find a mechanic to repair the Outlaw Star once they get to Symka 5. Gene and Melfina go looking for a bar. Aisha and Suzuka each go their separate ways while the ship is being worked on. Jim meets a girl named Hanmyo.

Jim meets up with Hanmyo a second time. They spend time in a park together. Once the Outlaw Star is repaired they take off even though Jim had plans to meet up with Hanmyo a third time. The Outlaw Star encounters the mystery ship that attacked them before.

Outlaw Star 1.19

Law and Lawlessness

The Outlaw Star is about to start salvaging what they can from a pirate ship that they just defeated when a powerful military ship arrives on the scene. The Outlaw Star and its crew are taken into custody and transported to a nearby base. Two officers of the Angel Links Security Service Force, Duuz and Valeria, interrogate Gene and Jim.

The Angel Links officers have their doubts about the story they are getting form Gene and Jim. They suspect that they are pirates. Everything changes when the real pirates attack. Gene and the crew of the Outlaw Star take off and engage with the pirates. The Outlaw Star is outnumbered until the Security Service Forces launch their ships and join the fight.

Outlaw Star 1.18

The Strongest Woman in the Universe

Fred Luo hires Gene to make sure that Reiko Ando does not win the Strongest Woman in the Universe contest for the 5th consecutive year. He promises lots of money if he can deliver. If Reiko wins then Fred will have to marry her.

Gene tries to get Aisha to take part in the tournament but the organizers won't let her in the contest because she is Ctarl-Ctarl. Twilight Suzuka has no interest in entering the contest. Gene winds up disguising himself as a woman and entering under the name of Jenny Starwind. He finds out after he has signed up that Aisha has found a way to sneak into the tournament.

Gene's first match is against Reiko Ando. He loses and is out of the tournament. Aisha makes it all the way to the finals where she faces off against Lady Irago, who defeated Reiko Ando in the semi-finals. Fred is overjoyed to learn that Reiko lost but refuses to pay Gene because he had nothing to do with Reiko's loss.

Between Life and Machine

The scene before the opening credits is about the differences between himans, robots, cyborgs, and bio-androids. Cyborgs are more or less augmented humans but bio-androids are something else. Are they really human?

Melfina is starting to have her doubrts about Gene keeping his promise to help her discover who she really is. She gets left behind when Gene and Jim go to meet with a potential client. The client turns out to be Ronald, the elder MacDougall brother. The meeting is all a scam to get Melfina alone so that Harry, the younger MacDougall brother, can swoop in and capture her.

Gene fights Ronald until he figures out what the MacDougall brothers are up to. Harry chases Melfina to the Outlaw Star. She gets inside before he can grab her. He uses his cybernetics to to enter the ship digitally. He tries talking her into opening the door but he pushes her a little too far and she lashes out and damages him.

Harry leaves empty handed and without his robotic arm. Gene and Jim get back in time to receive a mysterious message from a stranger whom they met once before. It is all about the Galactic Leyline.

Demon of the Water Planet

The crew of the Outlaw star are hired by an old outlaw. He wants them to help him recover a treasure worth 5 million. Gene and Jim talk it over before deciding to do it. The treasure is located on Heifong VII, the water planet.

The Old Man goes with them and tells them more while they are on their way to Heifong VII. There is a ship filled with 15 tons Dragonite, one of the rarest, most valuable substances in the galaxy. The catch is that the Dragonite is guarded by local monster like sea creatures. The Old Man has a plan. They distract the creatures and then go for the treasure. They think they have enough to time but the distraction doesn't keep the creatures occupied as long as they hoped it would.

An even bigger creature shows up. It grabs the Outlaw Star and tears off two of the grappler arms. The Old Man sacrifices himself to destroy the creature. The Outlaw Star returns home. The treasure turns out not to be as valuable as they thought it was. They get just enough money from selling it to fix up the Outlaw Star.

The Seven Emerge

Lord Hazanko sends Shimi, one of the Anten Seven (a feared gang of assassins) after Gene. Hazanko wants Gene dead for stealing the XGP (Outlaw Star). Gene's friends try to help him but he ends up having to finish the job on his own.

Thoughts

It seemed like Gene was overpowered but then he won. He seems to have killed Shimi (who first introduced himself as Leilong) but then it is revealed that the assassin survived the fight. It also seemed like Shimi/Leilong killed Jim, Suzuka, and Aisha but they also survive the fight. It seems like the assassin wants Gene and the others to think he is dead. I'm not sure that's a correct interpreation of this episode or what it might mean.

Final Countdown

Prologue: Ethics of thieves, pirates and outlaws.

Gene, Jim, and Melfina take a job towing an advertising ship. Things don't turn out as planned. The advertising ship is a trap. It is loaded with explosives placed there by the People's Liberation Front. The PLF threatens to blow up the advertising ship, causing lots of damage, if their demands are not met.

The government of Heifong has 5 hours to comply with the terrorists' demands. Gene can't stand to not do anything. His first attempt to find and deactivate the bomb ends with one of the Outlaw Star's grappler arms getting seriously mangled.

Aisha Clan-clan and Twilight Suzuka hear about what is going on and do what they can to help out. Gene compares notes with them and figures out what is going on. The terrorists are actually thieves using a bomb threat to make it easier to steal. He finds the detonator and defuses the bomb and then, with some help from Aisha and Suzuka, he stops the PLF

Outlaw Star 1.13

Advance Guard from Another World

Jim and Gene are short on cash. They put out ads but the offers they get are for too little money. Aisha Clan-Clan tries to get them interested in a job hunting down and killing a creature in the sewer but they kick her out when they hear what the pay will be.

Jim and Melfina end up taking a job that they hear about from Fred Luo. Gene is a little too proud to help out. Jim and Melfina go looking for an escaped inset and a plant. It doesn't take them long to figure out that the insect is the creature in the sewer that Aisha is searching for.

Gene meets up with an acquaintance, a woman. They go to get ice cream. Something weird is going on with the ice cream stand. It is extremely popular but the ice cream is not very good. There is a large cactus in the ice cream shop. Everyone (Jim, Gene, Melfina, Aisha) converges on the ice cream stand. The cactus starts to put out some strange vibes.

The cactus speaks through Jim. It claims to be superior to all humans and keeps them away but Melfina is able to approach it. She smashes the cactus, killing it.

Mortal Combat with the El Dorado

Gene and company head to the Lione Lagrange Point and search for the El Dorado, the MacDougall's spaceship. There is lots of interference from solar flares and asteroids that makes the search difficult and tedious. 

The El Dorado eventually shows up but it doesn't confront the Outlaw Star directly. It keeps circling around, behind asteroids. It shoots lots of missiles that keep the crew of the Outlaw Star on edge. Aisha encourages Gene to do something.

Gene gives Aisha a gun and a spacesuit and drops her off on an asteroid. She spots the El Dorado, contacts the others, and then the Outlaw Star moves in. The two ships engage in close combat with grappler arms. Gene boards the Eldorado and finds Harry MacDougall.

Harry stalls for time. He tries to hack the Otlaw Star's computer system. Gene figures out he's up to something and destroys the link he is using to hack the Outlaw Star. Harry and his small crew escape. Gene realizes that there wasn't just one El Dorado but two.

Outlaw Star 1.11

Adrift in Subspace

Gene and the crew of the Outlaw Star just barely escape the storm of debris. They make their way to the first rest point. Gene finds Harry MacDougall and confronts him over his part in trying to kill them at Farfallas. Harry plays dumb but Gene isn't buying it. He only backs off after security shows up.

The El Dorado, the MacDougall brothers' ship, takes off before the Outlaw Star. Gene tries chasing it, unsuccessfully. They get a distress call from someone who was forced to abandon ship. Jim wants to let the race officials help the stranded person but Gene insists that they help him. The stranded person turns out to be Aisha Clan-Clan. The don't have a choice at this point so they take her with them.

They don't see any sign of the El Dorado. Someone fires missiles at the Outlaw Star, just as they are getting ready to jump into hyperspace. It is too late to abandon the jump. the missiles impact just before they start the jump. Gene is forced to cut the engine while they are still in mid-jump.

The Outlaw Star and its crew survive the jump but two of the four engines are damaged. Gene comes up with a hairbrained scheme to make up lost time. Aisha Clan-Clan approves of the daring plan. It works and for a minute it seems like they will finish in 3rd place but at the last second someone beats their time.

Outlaw Star 1.10

Gathering for the Space Race

The Outlaw Star arrives at Heifong. Gene and Jim look into entering the space race. The entry fee is considerably more money than they have. They turn to Fred Luo for help. Fred agrees to pay their entry fee but it will be deducted from their winnings. They have to finish in the top three in order to win enough to cover the entry fee.

Gene looks for signs of the MacDougall ship. He doesn't spot it until it is too late to confront them before the race. Gene and Jim go to a reception before the race and run into Aisha Clan-Clan . She is working as a waitress for the company catering the event. She tries to attack them but then her boss calls her out for not doing her job. She cowers at the thought of not being paid and backs off.

The race begins. They have to hit certain checkpoints. Gene decides to take the most dangerous route to the first checkpoint. The episode ends with a the Outlaw Star looking like it is about to get overwhelmed by a storm of debris.

Outlaw Star 1.09

A Journey of Adventure! Huh?

The Outlaw Star heads for Heifong. The journey will take several days. Jim and Gene start to get on one another's nerves. Gene likes to play things by ear but Jim insists that they need to plan their next move.

They stop at a port on the way to Heifong. Suzuka is still with them. She has matters to attend to and takes off. Gene has heard that Zomba, a wanted man, lives in the port. Gene and Jim go looking for Zomba. They find him and capture him but the bounty turns out to be less than expected because it was an android copy of Zomba. They later find out that Suzuka captured the real Zomba and turned him in for a larger reward than they received.

Gene sees an advertisement for a space race near Heifong. He sees that the MacDougall ship is signed up for the race. He doesn't say anything to Jim about it but he decides on the spot that they must enter the Outlaw Star in the race.

Outlaw Star 1.08

Forced Departure

Gene is badly injured from the fight in the previous episode. There is poison in his body. The pirates offer to give them the antifote but only if they give up the ship. They refuse. Melfina heals Gene while Jim does what he can to keep the pirates at bay. Gene takes over once the posion has been purged from his system. He destroys most of the pirates. Suzuka deals with the leader.

Gene and Melfina get the Outlaw Star ready to blast off. The port authorities try to order them to stay put but they aren't willing to comply. Gene blasts off. Suzuka decides to go with them. They encounter 3 grappler pirate ships once they are in outer space. Gene deals with them and then they set a course for Heifong.

Outlaw Star 1.07

Creeping Evil

Jim recovers his car. It was in an impound lot. He doesn't realize it but it is bugged with tracking and listening devices. He goes back to work repairing machines to earn them some money. 

Melfina is attacked by one of the Kei Pirates. She runs. She is saved by Suzuka who was coming to see Gene.

Gene is also attacked by one of the Kei Pirates. The pirate wants to know what happened to Hilda. Gene fights the pirate and his accomplices. Gene deals with the accomplices but the pirate gets away.

They all meet up at the Outlaw Star. Suzuka doesn't like the Kei Pirates and offers to help them. Gene collapses from the wounds he sustained during the fight.
