She's Gotta Have It 1.10

#NolasChoice (3 DA HARD WAY)

Nola prepares Thanksgiving dinner for 4 and invites Jamie, Greer, and Mars over to share the meal. They each are a bit put out by the presence of the other two men but all three of them stick around. Each expresses himself in his own way. Nola shows them her latest creation, a painting that she calls three-headed monster. They are the three headed monster as depicted in her artwork.

The evening ends with all four of them dancing to Raspberry Beret by Prince after which they collapse on her bed and sleep. The men each get up and leave in their own time. Nola is left alone, until the buzzer rings. It's Opal. She's by herself for Thanksgiving and has brought over a bottle of champagne. Nola hesitates before deciding to buzz Opal in.

Bianca, Nola's next door neighbor, is angry about graffiti on her stoop. She blames Papo, the artist who wanders the neighborhood with a cart full of art. Papo denies the charge. Other people at the neighborhood meeting try to step in and suggest that there are bigger problems in the neighborhood than graffiti.

Nola has a therapy session with Dr. Jamison who tries to talk her into coming clean with her three lovers. Nola has her doubts about doing that. She thinks that she has the situation under control.

The episode opens with the day after the 2016 election. Everyone is down in the dumps. No one is pleased with the results. The moment passes. Life goes on.

She isn't eager for Greer's company but this time he is able to work some magic. Part of the spell he casts involves a plastic phallus that he is wearing when he shows up. She finally invites him in but she accidentally calls out Jamie's last name, Overstreet, in the middle of sex.

She's Gotta Have It 1.06

#HeGotItAllMixedUp (DYSLEXIA)

Nola's art show finally happens. She gets Mars to help her get her work to the space where the show happens. She asks him to stay outside but when he gets there he goes in anyway. He gets into an argument with Clorinda, whom he once dated. Nola gets there in time to separate Mars and Clorinda. Mars is hurt and he doesn't understand why Nola doesn't want him there.

Nola calls Shemekka only to find out that she is having her debut at the club the same night as the art show. Neither of them can accept the other's situation. They both feel hurt and blame the other. The conversation doesn't end on a friendly note.

She's Gotta Have It 1.05

 #4MyNegusAndMyBishes (ALL WORDS MATTER)

Nola continues to work at Harriet Tubman Middle School. Racqueletta Moss, the teacher who hired her, has doubts but keeps her on. Racqueletta Moss can see that Nola's heart is in the right place but she questions her methods. Nola gives the kids in the class an assignment to recreate an album cover. She is particularly impressed by one girl's work.

Jamie has to deal with a family crisis. His son made a music video where he and some of his friends performed in white face and used the n-word. It went viral. His son's school, a very expensive prep school, encouraged the students to create a viral video. The headmaster seems very pleased with how it turned out, until he has a sit down meeting with Jamie and Cheryl, Jamie's wife.

She's Gotta Have It 1.03

#LBD (LITTLE BLACK DRESS)

Mars shows Nola what he found. Someone defaced some of the posters she put up. It really gets to her. She finally takes Clorinda's advice and goes to see a therapist. The doctor recommends that she do something nice for herself. She takes the advice to heart and goes clothes shopping with Clorinda. She falls for a little black dress that costs over $500. Clorinda tries to talk Nola out of buying it but Nola needs it.

Nola goes out to dinner with Jamie. She wears the LBD. It's a little too much for Jamie. He tries, unsuccessfully, to get her to keep her jacket on. She knows he is married but he says that he and his wife are separated. She feels like he wants to keep her as a secret. He gives her a ride home and wants to come in but he's got one thing on his mind. She gets angry when he suggests that she shouldn't have worn that dress if she didn't want that kind of attention.

She's Gotta Have It 1.01

#DaJumpoff (DOCTRINE)

This episode feels like a remake of She's Gotta Have It (1986). I like a number of Spike Lee's movies but I don't love that one. I don't hate it. It just doesn't speak to me the way that some of his other films do.

Nola Darling, an artist, juggles relationships which (she says) are just about the sex, with three men: Jamie Overstreet, Mars Blackmon, and Greer Childs. They are each distinctly different but they all seem to want her to themselves.

There are a couple of scenes that I don't recall from the movie. One was the scene where she met with Clorinda Bradford, her former roommate, and a couple other friends for drinks. The other one was the scene where she was assaulted while walking home at night, near the end of the episode.
