Riot FOMO
The riot begins in earnest. Daya has Humphrey's gun and she shoots him in the thigh. It looks like things might get worse, she might kill him, but she doesn't. She does hold on to the gun.
Nichols and Morello go looking for druge. They have to deal with Angie and Leanne who are also jonesing for something. Nichols eventually find a key to the room where the drugs are kept.
Taystee, Black Cindy, Watson, and Abdullah take Caputo and Josh hostage. They force Caputo to read a message that they record on Josh's iPad. They post it on the internet with some help from Josh. The message is a more explicit version of what happened to Poussey.
Hapakuka hides under bed. Big Boo and Doggett hole up in the commissary. Judy King and Soso wind up in the library. Judy tries to comfort Soso who is still crushed by Poussey's death.
Some of the guards try fighting back. They lock up some of the inmates in the kitchen and then lock themselves in there too when lots more inmate come looking for them.
Beth tries hiding in the bathroom. Chapman and Vause finds her. They take her hostage but they get tired of her and try to lose her. She begs them to look after her. They find her a uniform and tell her to put it on.
Mendoza takes Humphrey to Burset. She talks Burset into trying to help him. Buset ends up taking him to medical. He winds up in a room with Suzanne and Kukudio.
Flores gets locks from the commissary and locks as many of the doors to the outside as she can.
Red and another inmate look through Piscatella's office for things. They find a book of old photos in one of his drawers.
Daya starts to go into a funk when Ramos and Flaca tease her about what her nickname will be when she gets sent to a higher security prison. She doesn't seem to have considered what might happen.
Daya finds a phone. She is getting ready to make a call when someone hits her over the head and takes the gun.
Thoughts
It has been almost a year since I finished watching Season 4. I had heard that this season takes place over the course of 3-4 days. I wasn't sure what to expect but the show seems to have the same sort of energy as the previous seasons. I was worried it would drag and feel slow. So far it doesn't. There's a good mix of humor and pathos. Presumably the riot is going to end near or at the end of the season.
I'm worried about Daya. I thought she might kill herself for a minute there. She really looks distraught over the possibility of being sent to maximum security.
I'm curious to see what happens to Beth. I've got a feeling it is going to be a wild ride for her.
The alarm starts to go off early in the episode. It doesn't get turned off until past the halfway point, about 30 minutes in. It made it hard to hear some of the things said.
I'm not sure what Red was looking for in Piscatella's office.
I'm not sure how time is supposed to have passed in this episode. My guess would be not more than a few hours.
Who hit Daya over the head? I have no idea. Red was one of the last people to see her. Could it have been Red? Could it have been a guard who was not seen in this episode?
I like the way this season begins. I'm in for at least a few more episodes.
